Started a 35x40 shop this week

I'm going to be doing most of the work... so we will see how much i can get done before snow fall.

It will be 1400sq.ft and will look just like the house.

Im in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada.

The ground has 4' of silt under the top soil then I need to build it up another 3-4'... so I wanted to be safe.... I will be at this house for the next 40 years.

A little back fill work untill the bob cat ripped its track. It will be finished on the weekend, then I can start building the forms.

Is your garage going to be a raised foundation???

It will have a 8" curb around the pad. 24" grade beam with the pad key'd into it. It will be the same height as the garage attached to the house.

Can you give any details on that?

I've always sort of wondered how those rubber tracks hold up over time. There are some reasons I've considered upgrading my Bobcat skidsteer to one of the tracked models, but the prices for replacement tracks may be the thing that kills the deal.

Well I know the tracked modles seem to do alot mor work in the same time as a wheeled one can.


They have a zirk fitting to fill with grease to tighten the track... it was loose and the track was walking off the drive wheel abit... then it ripped in half.. so only half was hanging on... he was still able to drive home (a few bolcks away) I was shocked not to see some big cables in the rubber.. there was some wire but not too much.

Started on the forms today, the 2x6 along the inside of the form is to key in the pad.... after the inner wall is up i will start on the rebar.

Well did some week this weekend (this part is a bit of a pain)... should be ready to pour for next weekend.

Just some of the steel work, dowels, ties and upper and lower rebar.

After the grade beam is done i will back fill the inside with mud then the last 6" will be foam and gravel.. or 6" of foam if i can get a good deal on some used 3" SM

yeah the pad is structural with the 6 piles under it plus being tied into the grade beam.

so you can put foam under it because it does not need any support. this will help the in floor heating, because it will not be dumping heat into the mud. You can do it with out piles i think.. but it needs a high psi foam "SM"

Well had the pump truck here today, me and my old man filled it up.... now to cover it with poly to keep the heat in over night.

Your last picture has a drill rig that looks like a Speedstar 30K or failing mud-rotary rig. God I have spent years in the field with them, never gone beyound 600 feet though.

they were drilling a well for geothermal heat next door... some thing was wrong with the truck... took them 8 hours

Now i need to get them up right... i have two wall jacks and im looking for 2-3 more but no one rents them

Well we had 10+ guys and we got the two walls up... today i just made the back wall... but i dont have a ton of guys to put it up tonight... so i just hope the wind keeps down untill Monday night... it is braced up pretty good and the winds dont come from the sides for the most part.

Well taking my sweet time (just in time for the truss pack) I got the front wall done and this week I should have the hip roof installed (9/12 pitch & 6/12 pitch to make a nice flat along the front).

(guy next door is building a nice house (3100sq.ft ish, tall as hell)

An impressive project! How thick will your floor be? Will it be uniform or will you thicken up and add additional rebar between the pilings?

it can be 5" thick (thats what the stamped drawing calls for)... i might go 6" and it will have rebar on 12" centers, you can see the dowels cast in to the grade beam, it will also have 4'x4' thick edge (12" total) under each of the six center piles.

Nice shop man. i am forming mine as we speak. Im building a 30x40. I was wondering if you had any problems lifting the truss and what did you lift them with. I am thinking i will be renting a high reach fork lift to do mine. Weird do see how different foundation construction are compared to here. Im digging the 240sx also.

I got a boom truck to lift them on the roof... but it was 180$ a hour

That will be my second option if i cant get a high reach forklift. Ive got a buddy that works for a rental company here and he usually can get me a piece of equipment for the weekend for little to nothing.

I put my 32' trusses up by hand with 4 friends and myself...the second day sure sucked when the wind picked up.

hey, that's a funny coincidence...I came on here looking for information on my own build that was inspired by your garage, and I find your garage on the net!.......I live on Minic and drive by your garage all the time....it's inspired me to build my own shop.....

I can see your place from my backyard, but the view to the new garage is blocked by the house on a hill on Pipeline....

keep it up....looks great! What did you have to do do be able to build more that 1200sqf..... Selkirk planning told me I could only do 1200, so I was going to do 30X40, but what I really want is 32X44
