Hello all. I started my garage makeover a few weeks ago. So far I have added a few electrical outlets and put up OSB board around the perimeter to protect the drywall. I've also done some painting but there is plenty of that left to do.

I started on soffit storage. I decided to use 1x3's screwed into studs along the wall, and a 2x4x12 suspended from the trusses by 5/16" all thread for the main "runner". I then used 23/32" plywood for the floor. It is only spanning 29". There are 2x3's cross pieces every 4', hopefully this will be enough. I don't plan on putting anything other than storage totes with misc stuff up there.

Here are a few pics, I'll update as I progress.

Thanks!

It is high enough that I can walk under it, even with my boots on. I'm 6'3" so it is around 6'7" from the floor to the bottom of the shelf.

I plan on adding some lights under it, then putting peg board along the wall under the shelf. I'll then put my toolboxes in that area.

Tomorrow I'm going to put sliding doors in the front also....

Thanks!

I liked it so much, I decided to build another section...

I am also going to add peg board under the original section... That's what the strips are for. Will add more pics tonight.

I'm convinced those Rubbermaid containers like you have there are the best invention since sliced bread.....and I'm a man who loves his sliced bread.

Last week my girlfriend and I cleaned out my shed with the help of several of those containers. It is so nice to pack similar materials; plumbing, electrical, extension cords etc, into those things and slide 'em up on the shelves.

Some good storage you have there.

Thanks regguy, I obtained my inspiration from you, xcyz, Jack, and a few others who posted on the GJ.

The rubbermaid containers have worked great. I chose them for the soffit storage. I wanted to be able to walk under them and also put those containers up there.

I will be adding sliding doors this week. I am going to cut grooves into 1x3's like Jack did.

I put pegboard up today. I still have to do the finish trim around the edges (ran out o lumber).

Have you thought about covering the all-thread with pvc pipe. I think it looks better then exposed threads, doesent cost all that much, and is paintable. Its just an idea I like.

Started on the sliding doors... I made my own tracks out of 1x3's. The top one is made from laying a 1x3 flat and cutting four channels, then cutting it in half, so one piece makes two strips. The bottom is on edge and also serves as the trim/face of the lower portion. The doors are very thin tileboard... Almost too thin, but it was cheap and would be easy to replace. My channels are over-sized so I can upgrade easily in the future.

I also have some stuff hanging on my pegboard now.

I still need to build the end pieces, install lighting underneath, and paint trim.

Nice idea using the threaded rods.

It's nice to have storage without using floor space......

I did a soffit storage also.
Here's the thread with photos:

It's also on this video:

Another way to do it is to use chain, and lag hooks. I did sorta the same thing in my basement and was able to make 2 sections of 3 each 8' long with the others hanging under the top one using the chain method.
