Starter set for my brother

I'm trying to help my brother pick out a starter set of tools. He is currently thinking of buying this set from Sears,

For $300 I'm thinking there is better sets out there, although I'm not finding much that comes with the wide size selection in sockets that the Craftsman set has.

Ideally l'd like to find him something with comparable size sockets and wrench but with out the "filler" like the ignition wrench sets and screw driver bits and nut drivers and allen wrenches. One of the nice things about that set is that it comes with allen sockets though.

I would like to stay under the $300 range and COO is not important to him, he's aware that the CMAN stuff isn't USA made.

That 309 is one of my super bargain picks in the tool world. The only thing better is when its on sale, has been seen for 199$ but no one is robbing anyone at that price either as its just well picked and as a set super cheap. The only real loser in it is the ratchets, you could sell them or trade for HF

There are so many major pieces it makes this a deal and even the filler is stuff you need. Who wouldn't give a dollar for one of those bits when needed?

That set is commonly priced at $199, sometimes even a few bucks less. It's a nice set, even if Chinese. He must already have a toolbox?

Their 348pc set is a good mechanic set as well, and I think is still on sale for $399. A coupon or points could bring it lower. That one will be USA-made.

Yeah from what I've found looking around for a bit it seems like this is a bargain especially when on sale. I think I'll try to talk him into waiting for a sale.

Yes he does have toolbox. He had a smaller set of CMAN stuff that he has lost/misplaced most of and he seems to finally be serious about taking care of his stuff so instead of buying what he lost, which is quite a bit, he wants to just start over.
