Hey guys, what should I use for starting my vinyl siding on the gable end, starter strip or J-channel with holes drilled?

Would the J channel give a better look?

What do you suggest?

thanks

k

Id go starter. You just have to get it just right.

I did a few spots on my house siding with j, and they all catch a bunch of ****, leaves, dirt, etc.

You might be able to bend a drip-edge under the starter strip, out of trim coil, to help make sure drops didn't start rolling along via surface tension and getting sucked back in.

But it would have to be hemmed/double thickness as you need the outer color on both sides of the aluminum piece.

You need the starter to clip the lower part of the siding ... J channels are a pain in those situations and along roof lines ... it's a limitation with the product.

You can also do thin freeze board with a drip

The J channel is a dead give away that it is vinyl. Makes it look cheap. Real clap doesn't use anything like J channel. Use J only when there is no other choice.

Use a frieze board that matches the rest of your trim with a drip edge and a starter strip above it if you really want it to look nice.

starter strip, if its down a hair from the soffit then no worries about dripping back

I agree with this.

I am not really worried about it looking like vinyl, because it is. I am not sure what frieze board is, looking it up it is like a framing piece. Would I use that along the bottom to make a base? It would stop the natural flow of water wouldnt it?

I think I will just put a level strip of starter across and start my siding that way. Below is not soffit, just the upper frame of garage door. unless that is also called soffit in this case.

thanks for the help guys.
