Starting a new 30x32 pole building

This week has been a good week, I got my building permit Tuesday. Lumber picked up and trusses ordered. Load of crush and run coming fri and a bobcat with auger scheduled to be here Saturday morning.
Now To make a decision... Inspector said each hole needs to be 36" deep and 18" dia. And it was up to me whether I wanted to pour a 9" footer and backfill with dirt or set post on compacted stone and fill with concrete. What would you guys do. I live in southern Virginia if that helps. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Just did a 30x30 in Ga. Holes were dug with an auger, post dropped in the hole with 2 80# bags of Quick-Crete around them and filled with the dirt that came out of the hole.

Inspector passed it.

I'm located in Ringgold Va

I cleared my site today and used an Ager to drill my holes. All the dirt that came out is red clay so I think I'm just going to pour concrete around my poles.

I am in Yorktown, we are a ways away. I went with the floating design (stone and concrete) vs. the footer due to the suggestions from my inspector.

not a lot has happened in a month or so.... work got busy, and I'm trying to pay for this as I go, so this is another slow build.
Plan to prep for concrete and work on closing in during the winter months.

This may seem like a dumb question but I am asking because I don't know. What are you using to auger the holes 18" wide? Is it one of the two man augers or a bobcat.

Just curious because I am getting ready to do a building. I heard those two man jobs are hard to hang on to.

Bobcat or a tractor with a 3 point hitch and PTO driven auger.

Don't even try it by hand.

Rented a bobcat with auger attachment and 18" bit. Made the job real easy. Well worth the money spent.

Make sure you double check all your measurements before you start digging, layout string lines an measure more than twice!

Looking to do a similar size shop in central va. I think I've decided I'm going to pay someone to get it looking like a pavilion and I finish the rest myself since I have no help. I'll be following your build so keep us posted with the progress.

Crew showed up today to prep for concrete. They formed up sides, laid vapor barrier and rebar.

Ok.. I know I'm slow but I got some work done over the last couple weeks.

Walls framed and sheeted.
Windows in and walk thru door in.

Garage doors on order 9x9

My brothers coming over tomorrow and we will try and get facia and soffit done and maybe get started on siding.

They came out of a local office building, shod light things quit well.

Looking to build my pole barn soon so I have a quick question. Why do people put down the gravel before drilling holes for the posts. I would think you would loose a lot of the gravel from mixing with the drilled dirt. Wouldn't it be better to drill and set the posts first then put down the gravel a after all the excavation has been done? I only ask because I've never built a barn before.

Very nice looking building. My gut feeling is that you will have more than enough light. You will have 40 lamp tubes over 960 square feet. That is one tube for every 24 square feet. A standard 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of plywood has 32 square feet.

I don't know what the recommended wattage per square feet is for T8 lamp tubes. Someone here will know.

Lighting for workbenches, drill presses, grinders, etc. should be placed so the user/operator does not cast a shadow over the workpiece.

seems like a LOT of light there... There is a site on here for calculating the required lumens based on what you do in the shop. If anything I'd put them on multiple switches so you onle use what is needed, maybe 3 zones?

imo you cant have too many lights!! But i agree with msgross, have them on different switches...maybe switch for each row? Only change i would suggest is to have lights directly on top of work bench you have in lower right corner. This way you wont have shadows when using bench.. as pointed out by big overalls.

I have 25'x25' and have 16 fixtures total. Each being 4' in length and consist 2 t8 tubes. I have them on 4 switches.

Thanks for the replies, I plane to set the lights on 2 or 3 switches and later add task lighting over work bench in corner.

JBourquin; I spread gravels out after holes were drilled, my main reasoning being I planed to leave the pole roof up for the winter and finish the building the following summer.

I plan on siding my pole barn. ive been debating on doing the walls this way or not. I would like to do them but i wonder if it would be better to have them just build the building and save me the time. are you drywalling the inside?

It has been a while since last post, but I got a bit done. I run the electric , 100amp service , about 24 recepticles on three breakers, and some lights.

I have more lights to come should be about 20 in all.
