Google Jody at welding tips and tricks , he does a short video ever two weeks or so fun to watch and you will learn a few things. I never took a class but have gotten quite good over time. I have two sets of torches, 3 MIGs,two tigs, and plasma cutter. Pic of my last little project, floor pans, truck pan, full frame rails and complete aftermarket suspension, mini tubs, and both Left and right quarter panels, plus shave most emblems off. Practice or better yet build things and you will improve.

Oh yes, I'm subscribed to Jody's videos. My instructor was pretty surprised by my first couple beads, and was surprised when I told him I'd never touched a tig torch before. I 100% attribute that to Jody's videos. I like how he talks about what he's doing and why, and his arc shots are the best in any video series I've seen.

I've been working at home on checking my penetration on a t-joint on 3/8" with mig. I set it up similar to how my cert test will be, but I've doing both sides. Anyway, I've finally gone from this:

To this:

I realize that bead profile on the left isn't so good, but I feel like if I can reliably get good penetration like that, I can trust my welds to a certain degree.

Glad you're getting what you wanted from the class, it's nice hearing about the experience from a hobbyist perspective. As someone who's new to welding all the examples of bad welds (not that you've shown them) are more useful for learning I've found than the "perfect bead" pictures.

Well I passed my 2F certification. I guess now it's time to practice and learn to actually make stuff.
