Hey fellas, currently living in Germany and was wondering if there are any must get German tools while here.

The local Bau's or hardware stores carry some basic stock but not as extensive as the HD's or Lowes like back home. The more specialized Wurth stores are only for business licensed buyers, which I am not. Bastards. At least I can window shop.

There are some mom and pop hardware stores around here where I still find tools with "Made in West Germany" markings, dust and all.

When I lived closer to the Czech border there were more/cheaper places to shop, now here near the French border, not so much.

Sadly, I look forward to going into a HD or Lowe's when I will be on vacation coming up this summer! Thanks guys.

In order of my personal preferance, I would look out for...

1. Sausages
2. Beer
3. BMW E34 M5
4. Stahlwille
5. Hazet
6. Elora
7. Gedore

:D

If I'm honest, my favourite hand tools are actually Facom
So I'd keep a keen eye out for any Facom bargains.

Hire a car and take a weekend trip to the UK, There are a few industrial suppliers that sell good quality tools to the public. Cromwell Tools and Buck and Hickman. Machine Mart is the UK's version of Harbor Freight and they are in every major town. Screwfix carries some tools such as Teng Laser, Wera. Toolstation carries lower end tools but their wrenches are decent quality. Also a major retailer called Halfords is a good resource for auto tools, spares and supplies especially their bigger outlets. The £sterling is also 1.17 Euro at the moment so the exchange rate is not to bad.

Where in Germany? The border with France is long and variable. I remember some towns where the street and road signs were in both German and French. I guess it saved having to change them after every war.

Another benefit of being in an EU country is that there is no import tax between nations so you could mail order tools online from any country in the EU with great ease. Mail order would open up Sweden,UK,Spain,Czech Rep, etc all with good tool histories. German tools are viewed as quality items and are easily available all over the EU. www.toolstop.co.uk has a good selection.

I thought Würth stores were OK for anyone? The one in the little town in central Finland where my company has a plant will certainly sell me anything as a walk-in. Of course, if I use my company affiliation I get a 50% discount. (We're a mile up the road and the biggest employer in town). I've brought home some nice Zebra tools from there.

One of my favorite German products is a Zarges box.

They're great, and not easy to find here in the US. Not cheap anywhere, though. Most of my camping or photo gear lives in Zarges boxes when I'm out and about.

Meter Weiners, Doner Kabobs, crates of Franziskaner Weissbier............or were you talking about tools?:D

Forget the tools for now, go see some stuff when you get the chance. My best friends brother was stationed there and made the trip to see the Eagles Nest with some friends when he had some time.

Definitely worth the effort/logistics to get there.

Curious if military get any "special deal" to ship back one vehicle when they return to USA??

I'd bring back a unique vehicle that you can't get in USA . . . .like a bi-fuel Mercedes . . . . . . . . . or bi-fuel BMW . . . or bi-fuel Audi . . . . . . or quad-fuel Volvo??

According to the craigslist scam the military people get to ship cars all the time haha.

On a serious tool note, some have said that more Wiha Microfinish is available there than here, as well as the Bosch brushless Impaktor.

I'd also probably be drawn away by beer food, and those serving them:).

Buy me a Fendt and ship it back via Military, may be cheaper eh?

Buy a Brockhaus Heuer vise if you need one. They're made from forged and welded steel. The German prices seem to be far better than the USA prices. Alternately if you have the transport capability, some of the older german tool carts have cool designs.

ive looked into this before. it is basically impossible to import a car unless it is already available here in the u.s., or a model very nearly the same. the car in question would be a b5 audi rs4. b5 a4's and s4's are available in the u.s., and the rs4's and s4's have very similar engines, so it is actually possible.

if you are trying to import a car that doesnt have a u.s. equivilant, you can import it but its basically impossible to register it. case in point: a porsche 959. bill gates loved the 959 so much (a technological miracle in the 80's considering it rivals today's supercar performance) that he actual was able to influence congress to pass the "show and display" law. goes to show what money can get you.

but yeah, the only german cars you'll be importing is something either available here, or something very closely available here. if i tried, i could probably find the pdf file from the government of acceptable cars to personally import.

oh yeah. i almost forgot. IF you go through all the trouble of trying to import a eurospec car, AND pay the THOUSANDS in fees and taxes, it takes like two years for the whole process to happen. needless to say, its a *****

Well, that's what I was thinking... what would be exclusive to Germany that we wouldn't already have in the USA?

It depends on your needs. If you work on cars, I advise you to get Klann and Sauer tools. If you work on modern diesel VAG cars, go and buy a special tool -invented from me- here in germany.

Serious, if you are not interested in special tools and pricey diagnostic equipment, you get almost everything cheaper, easier and in an extreme better variety in the USA.

As you mentioned that b2b problem with wurth, you will hardly find a tool shop here, also consider, most germans don't speak english!

For me, it's easier to import snap-on tools from the usa than buying it locally from a snap-on dealer!!!

Once you are in an auto spare part store, I promise, you will get shocked by their tool prices:eyecrazy: . Most time their assortement is marginal....what they do is to show you an overpriced cataloug and you can choose...

SEAR's, Napa, HomeDepot,Tool trucks??? Pfff...not here.

But if you want to buy some german stuff for a good price, check ebay.de
We have some good onlineshops.

PM me if you need help

For the VAT question, wouldn't it be possible to ship your bought tools using UPS, FedEx or similar to your home address, without the packaging and declaring it as used goods or gifts ?
Just a thought, I haven't tried this before, but there must be a way?

Thanks everybody for some awesome and expensive suggestions, unfortunately I do not make General pay to afford some of those ideas.

To answer a few questions about VAT and cars, etc.:

-we get a certain amount of weight for shipping our Household goods, (thousands of pounds, more rank, more weight), so whatever you can bring with you legally back to the US.

-you can ship to and from 1 vehicle plus a motorcycle, scooter. If you buy a new US Spec vehicle here (BMW,Audi, etc) the dealer gives you a free ship to home deal at the dealers expense. Doesn't count towards Gov shipped vehicle.

-any vehicle that is older than 25 years can be brought back, irregardless of meeting US specs or not (last time I checked).

-We get what are called VAT forms, cost 4 bucks each, and can be used to take the 19% tax from items you buy, most big stores allow them, some don't. Prudent to only use for larger purchases. Otherwise we pay for everything off post in Euros with the 19% tax! 100 Euros is equivalent to over 131 USD, it adds up fast.

-a European 4 star hotel, equivalent to a US 3 star runs about 150 Euros (usually more) in most big cities, so it burns a hole in your pocket quick.

-if you are traveling to Europe and hope to get all your tax money back at the airport, you'd better know how it works! Just having a receipt from a store does not matter, the purchased item must come with a tax return receipt/form in order to use it when claiming tax back at the airport. PITA.

-been living off and on for over 11 years in Deutschland so I have traveled a bunch. Took the train to the Berlin wall as it was coming down (first duty station in Nurnberg and decided to go check it out live with a couple of buddies!), went to the Gulf War from here (also Egypt, Kosovo, Bosnia and again to Iraq in a Military status).

I have been part of the pre and post cold war in Germany so have seen my share of changes, like not been able to convoy your tanks on the Autobahn anymore!

All in all, living here is a blast! Just bought a mini keg of a Pilsener beer for 4 Euros , was on clearance at the Aldi store. Beer is cheap but I'm starting to see a trend like smaller 12 oz bottles for the same price. Damn.

Pet peeves: nothing is free, like water at lunch (2.20 euro a glass usually, sodas and beer are more for really small glasses). Ketchup is extra and the food selection kinda *****, meaning you get better quality/selection in anywhere USA. You can't eat schnitzel and dumplings every day.

It usually cost 50 euro cents to use a bathroom and more at gas stations on the autobahn.

-Traveling is awesome, I just got back from a week in Ireland, driving the Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher, etc. I did a week driving all over the UK a month before that. Paris is 2 1/2 hours by train. I have driven all over Europe but the beauty of driving while in Germany is that we pay US prices for Gas (we get a 400 liter a month ration). Not so while out of Germany, you have to be stationed in that country to get the US rates.

Did I say I loved the Autobahn? I was driving 120 MPH just today to get home but kinda windy and rainy so I slowed down to a safe 100. Germans respect the laws, not like those G-damned Italians when I was driving the Amalfi coast last year! I now hate scooters. No offense to crazy Italian drivers, of course.

Sorry folks for the long reply, got on a tangent here!

ps, Blöckw@rt, can I buy anything from the tool factories in the Bergisches Land triangle? It looks beautiful out there though, might go down there next week if the sun is shining!
Danke Schon und schones wochenende! sorry, I don't have umlauts on my keyboard!

Guten Morgen ;)

I will not able to give any concrete shops, but I think that there must be a few in the area.
Directly from the factories you probably can not buy anything.

If you near Frankfurt am Main you could be a visit some time in this shop.
