I bid up a 1/2" drive Big dawg to a maximum of $12.50, was outbid at the last minute and within 2 minutes of the auction ending i was presented with a second chance offer.... Wtf. A little further research into the winning bidder shows he has only bid on this sellers auctions 100% of the time. Am i wrong or is this a perfect example of someone bidding up there stuff and getting caught with it?

You most likely would be correct.I know it *****,but you can't prove it.

If you need/want it,buy it. Or teach him a lesson which he 's probably already learned but doesn't care and walk away.

well he may have bid on that and then also saw another item that the seller had for sale. maybe. I looked through his other completed auctions and the buyers have had 2 feedback up to over 100 feedback, so its tough to tell. I have also gotten some scam emails for second chance offers that looked real, but werent, so its tough to tell.

Could be coincidence, 2 feedback might just be a flaky noob that maybe didn't pay in one of the previous auctions so the seller didn't expect him to this time.

Sure seems like the charges enough for shipping.

I have the same wrench from the same seller. I was outbid on an earlier auction, but won the next.

Funny thing is, they sent a second chance offer for the first auction but it went to my wife's spam account and I never saw it. I saw it after the second auction...I guess I outbid his sniped reserve.

I received the wrench as described, they even wrote "oil before using" on the receipt.

I was presented with a second chance offer as well. My theory was that he, like all the other guys selling these things, have boxes and boxes of these new old stock ratchets and he's getting rid of them twice as fast without having to pay auction fees. Selling one to the highest bidder and one to the second highest. Could be wrong, but the bidding history on that particular auction doesn't prove anything.

I've bought a couple of Big Dawgs from this seller too, and both times I was outbid and received a second chance offer. I wondered about the offers, but accepted anyway since they were offered to me at my max. bid, which was a total shipped amount that I was happy with anyway. I just figured (told myself....) that they probably had a lot of these ratchets and were selling them off quicker with second chance offers. If the second chance offer is a price you're happy paying, then I don't see any problem, moral or otherwise, with accepting the second chance offer.

Just remember:

1. All auctions are suspect since the first camel sold in the plaza 3,000 years ago. Every auction I've ever attended had shill bidders, phantom bids, insider timing and groupings of items and many other slick tricks.
2. eBay has decided it is no longer a flea market auction for one-at-a-time items from amateur sellers. eBay has decided to squeeze out the individuals and instead becoming a retail marketplace, more like Amazon, with a few larger sellers.
3. What you are describing is business as usual.

I've thought that about eBay for a couple of years now...kinda takes away the novelty of it all and the fun of searching for good buys. Maybe they should have a tiered seller system like PayPal does for business. If you are really doing it as a business, then go all the way; if you want to garage sale it have a different setup but still be higher quality than say CL.

The problem here is really that eBay charges TOO much to set a reserve. Whether or not this one is just a coincidence, or it's really shill bidding, is impossible to tell, but it does exist all over eBay. The high reserve fees, combined with the extra attention your auctions get from starting auctions at $.99 tempts sellers to pull this type of thing instead of paying to set a reserve.

For a while I would bid on some of my son's auctions. It was not an attempt to bid the item up...I really wanted the items. But since both eBay accounts shared the same address, ebay caught on, and cancelled all his auctions. Cost us MANY hours of work to relist all these items. I did not realize at the time, it is against eBay policy to bid on a household member's items. I did not make any attempt to hide my identity, but there are certainly ways to do so. Now, if I want one of his tools, I just take it.....But he knows that he would have not made a dime on his eBay business without my help, so he's OK with that. But the moral of the story is that eBay DOES care about this, and their computers DO search for sellers bidding on their own auctions. But with a little effort to deceive, it is easy to beat this system. Bottom line, it is really not that harmfull a process; after all, there are plenty of ways to guarantee a certain minimum price for your auctions.

And some tool brands just do not draw the necessary attention to warrant the risk of selling at $.99 with no reserve. I would NEVER sell a Proto ratchet that way for example. But if it was Snap-on, Matco, MAC, or Cornwell, I would always start a ratchet at $.99 with no reserve. There are enough folks like you guys drooling over the potential for a steal on these used truck tools, that market forces always seem to get the item to a decent selling price. If I had a Proto ratchet, I'd use a fixed price listing.

Contact Ebay, they should know about them. If the seller doesn't like the Ebay rules, maybe they shouldn't be selling there.

This seller is legit. I have bought a few ratchets from them. I wait until they first list the item at the low price. I put minimum bid and always get a second chance. Then bought them at that price.

Well thanks for all the info on this seller, I apologize for my rants as it appears he just tries to unload as many ratchets via 1 auction. I did not report him to ebay because frankly there is no way of proving it. I must say there is better ways to sell mulitple items than offering second chances, I would think the ebay system wouldnt allow the seller to sell multiple items to multiple buyers on 1 listing. :headscrat

IMHO, I think some of you are WAAAAY over-reacting to this. Second chance offers aren't just a way for the seller to recoup a failed sale to a bad high bidder, or as some of you seem to think, still get a sale from a high shill bid gone bad. If a seller has multiples of the same item, it's perfectly legit to make second chance offers via ebay to as many other bidders on the original auction as he chooses, and it only takes a few clicks to do it. The seller pays the final value fee on each successful second chance, but he avoids the additional listing fees and delays waiting for more new auctions of the same item to end. For a seller interested in moving multiples of an item and not overly concerned about trying to maximize every single sale regardless of how long it takes (or how much it costs), well it makes sense to me.

How many times are comments made about overpriced stuff on the 'bay or CL that keeps getting re-listed because its not selling, and how moronic or foolish the seller is for wanting such a high amount? Now here's a seller possibly satisfied enough with the second high and maybe more lower bid amounts to make second offers and take a little less to get extra sales quickly in an ebay approved manner. Now the complaints are that he must be shilling because he reacted so quick, or because the high bidder on one auction that someone lost was a newbie that had bid on other of the same seller's auctions. Is it so hard to believe that since he appears to not list many auctions at one time (9 at the moment) and ends them all with a minute or two of each other, that he might be watching them close so he can get out the second chance offers quickly if he's satisfied enough with some of the lower losing bids? While any closing minute bidders are likely still online and might react quickly to his offers?

Now I don't personally know this guy, but I did bid/buy something from him back in April (probably a long handle comfort grip Big Dawg) and left him a positive for the satisfactory experience. I did a quick scan of some of his feedback - he's got a virtually flawless record for the past two years (100% for the past year) - a neutral or two and one neg from a buyer almost 2 years ago who thought he bought more than was listed/described - with over 6800 feedbacks received, the vast majority of them for selling. His shipping falls mostly in the $6 to $7 range, which seems right reasonable for the stuff he's selling. Frankly, to me that sounds like the description of a pretty decent seller to consider doing business with.

I can see no reason to blatantly malign the guy on a publicly accessible forum for nothing more than silly supposition and alleged "evidence" that doesn't even reach a circumstantial level. Can some of you people ever be satisfied?

Clam down, I was the initial poster of this thread and found it extremely suspicious that the winning bidder had 100% bid history with this guy and i received the 2nd chance offer less than 2 minutes after the end of the sale. I never made any reference to the quality of his items, shipping etc.... I felt it was suspicious at least and after some feedback from a "publicly accessible forum" i have changed my opinion and its evident this guy sends out numerous 2nd chance oportunities, And i apologized for my rant. And yes i can be satisified.

Did anyone really look at the "supposed" 100% bidding? . It's 2 stinking bids on the same one item. Everyone overreacted before even looking.

It's a new item, he obviously has more than one. I suggest before you condemn the seller, that you actually look at who bid when.

Sigh......... Yes it was 100% bidding, 2 for 2 in the last 30 days coupled with the 2nd chance offer within minutes and it felt shady. As i stated earlier was sorry for jumping to conclusions but it felt shady and after numerous similar stories i have apologized. But im still not ruling out shill bidding.

hiball, i think you are being reasonable. i have had good luck with this guy but what you describe sounds a litttle off. you need to watch out for yourself first. not sure why guys are on you for using caution with your money and wanting to make sure others know what has happened to you. thanks for your input.

Just be curious i tried to initiate a 2nd chance offer for a item that i sold, been paid for and has shipped. Here is ebays policy on 2nd chance offers.

When to use a Second Chance Offer
You can make a Second Chance Offer to someone when:

Your item didn’t sell because the reserve price wasn’t met

You have duplicate items for sale

The winning bidder didn’t pay you

So it is possible for the seller to send them out if he has duplicates, which is evident by his feedback. Whether there was some shill bidding involved who knows, Like i said the winning bidder had 100%, 2 for 2 within the last 30 days with this seller. That means he didnt bid on anything else on ebay within the last 30 days. It all could be coincedence, Who knows? But after the numerous positive responses here im willing to give the seller the benefit of the doubt.

Actually, if you look at the quantity of sales this fellow has, it really makes you wonder. Only a handfull of different items, but thousands of sales. As stated above, he uses second chance offers like crazy. If you look at that particular item, the Proto 1/2" ratchet, he has sold MANY of them. I saw one priced at $3.26. Obviously he has obtained a very large number of these, but he must have gotten them for next to nothing, (or free), for him to be able to make a profit selling them for $3. I know on most he gets a bit more money, but why send a second chance offer for so low a bid unless it's still profitable?

What I want to know is where I can buy 100 high quality US made 1/2" ratchets for less than $300....or do I have to steal them????

Actually I am the "clam", er...calm one - I didn't jump to a hasty conclusion after losing an auction and start a thread titled "Stay away from this ebayer" with the link to the auction and identity of the seller. I also didn't insinuate in the opening post that it could be "a perfect example of someone bidding up there stuff and getting caught with it?" with a little "wtf" thrown in. While you believe "there is better ways to sell mulitple items than offering second chances", I believe there are better ways (read that as more polite and discrete ways) to question the possibly suspicious results of a particular auction without quickly throwing around the old and over-used shill bidder reasoning and maligning the integrity of the seller. When people click on a thread titled "Stay away from this ebayer", they're looking to see who the loser is they need to avoid, not to see if you've found an answer to your concern. Questioning/investigating a suspicion you have is one thing, your thread title alone went way farther than that.

Not exactly. It was 2 for 1 in the last 30 days - 2 bids placed on only 1 item. Since he's only bid on 1 item in 30 days of course he's going to show as bidding 100% on 1 seller in 30 days. I've only placed 2 bids on 2 items in the past 30 days, and so show a 50% bid rate on 2 sellers. Could that possibly indicate that I might be a shill bidder for those sellers? 50% is an awfully high bid rate... And that's nice of you to apologize for jumping to a conclusion that you're really not gonna give up.

And no, I'm not getting on you "for using caution with your money and wanting to make sure others know what has happened to you" as was suggested by another. Doesn't look to me like anything happened to you except losing an auction and refusing an offer on a new ratchet for a "moral standard". That's fine, to each his own. Warnings about bonafide shysters and miscreants infesting the 'bay are appreciated. It's just that when someone jumps to a fast conclusion after losing a low dollar item to an infrequent bidder, makes unsupportable assumptions about the seller and high bidder, apparently doesn't look at or give any consideration to the seller's extensive positive feedback and history, doesn't investigate the particulars and requirements of ebay's "second chance" offers, and then starts a thread titled "Stay away from this ebayer" just because it "felt shady", well that ain't no helpful cautionary tale that others can learn from and avoid a bad fate. It's over-reaction that stokes a fire and benefits no one. As an ebay seller yourself, is that how you'd prefer to be treated?

Ok, 2 seperate bids within the last 30 days with 1 seller even though its only 1 item is still 2 for 2 , He came to the plate twice and bid twice with the same seller and that seller ONLY, K??.. Secondly out of all the jumbled up mess all i can say is neither me nor YOU have any idea whether it was legit bidding but i have at least 3 times in this thread have apologized for my initial wording. Im not sure What you want me to say, Nor do i care. So quit beating a dead horse. Also, to boot i may have been under the influence of "I Hate Ebay sydrome" after some Jackarse (*** if your not getting the symbolism Clam= Calm) Ended one of my auctions with this hogwash...

Dear sjc123,

Hello,
I have won the auction using the buy it now and I want you to answer the below questions accordingly before I get the bank check and send it out to you.
1. Can I trust you with the money?
2. Will you be able to wire transfer the added fee the same day you receive and cash the check? Because I will add my shipper fee on the check ,that mean I will put additional fee on the check so when it clear you will have to just deduct your item fee and kindly pay the balance to the shipper I have got.
3. Will you be available when the shipping company will be coming for the pick up?
4. Is the item just the way you describe it in eBay?
5. Again Can I take you for your words?
6. You can provide me your name; address and phone number if you are agree to the above
Questions so that I can send the bank check by tomorrow. AGAIN I DO NOT HAVE A PAYPAL account that mean am going to send the full payment by check that is cashable at your bank same day.
Thanks

I hate how everyone lists non snap-on with snap-on keywords to get more views. Williams isn't Snap-on it's Williams. Don't list "snap it on" on your HF socket set so it shows up on a SO search...I hate looking and listing after listing of junk that's not SO.

Report them as listing violations. It's pretty easy to do.

This sounds like the con: "Buyer" sends you a bogus money order or cashiers check in an amount exceeding what the item sold for. Then you are instructed to deposit it in your local bank and wire transfer the excess funds back to the buyer or his "shipper" accomplice. Days later your bank notifies you that the check was bad and they have deducted the funds from your account to cover the fraudulent check.
Sorry if y'all knew this already.

P.S. Hiball, I'm glad you saw it as the "hogwash" that it is!
