Steel awning/overhang thing

I'm looking to put a 10' metal awning/overhang on the side of a 20' container. Originally I was going to just fabricate a frame out of strut or square tube and screw some corrugated roof panels to it but the thought crossed my mind that maybe one of those metal building companies might already sell some kind of kit like this for cheaper than I could build. I've tried the google machine but all I can find are carport type things. Anyone seen anything like this out there?

Try that; when I did mine, nothing I saw did what I wanted so I built this - main structurals are 1/4" wall 2x2, roof framing is 2x2x.120 wall, roofing is from HD. Roof is 24'x24', covers the 20' container and leaves about 24x15' area on one side of the container.

Result is complete shade for the container, so inside temp = outside temp MINUS the extra 80 degrees from solar gain...

I used 2 courses of 12' long panels. Entire roof system is modular (challenged my OCD to get modules to actually FIT each other :=)

Still a few things to do, I work alone (no choice) so it ain't quick. I don't think I saved anything from a kit price, but I got what I need instead of what someone ELSE thinks I need... Steve

If you're referring to my build, not necessary; at the roof's lowest point there's a 1' overhang, and 2' overhang at both ends of the container. Not shown in the pic are the pulleys/poly rope/tarps "curtains" that now close in all sides - by next year I hope to have modular sliding barn door panels all around... Steve

If you weren't, (and complete coverage is NOT gonna happen, good call :=)

Looks good! that thing has got to weigh a ton! I'll probably just end up building something too since we're pretty slow right now and I have the time.

When I had some outside work done to the house and garage, the contractor and I spoke about a metal awning for over the back service door
To the garage. He couldn’t find anything from his suppliers that was acceptable. So we settled on a 6x6 wood lean to type porch. I’m
Happy with the results.

Not really all that heavy; the 12x24 section over the container was mostly built in place but could be removed in one piece if absolutely necessary (My Case 580 and some of the "tinker toys" I've fabbed makes it possible) - The open half 12x24 is in 3 8x12 bolt-together sections, can be lowered (pivoted down) and unbolted section by section - each 8x12 weighs a bit under 300# .

The two halves are hinged (to each other) in such a way that the outer half can swing down WITHOUT disturbing the roofing, but when the roof is as shown in the pic there's a 6" overlap so no leaks at that joint.

If you decide to build your own roof, I have a LOT more pics during construction including my ways of mounting a frame to the container (still completely removable, nothing actually welded to the container).

It's your thread, let me know if you want more... Steve

Yeah some more pictures would be good, your fab skills are great. Mine would have to be a little different since I have a roof fan and lighting on top of the connex, I might have to hang a lip, like maybe a piece of 2x2 angle on the edge of the connex and build off of that, at least it would still be removable then without cutting.

I can post more pics, probably tonite; I'll see what I have re: attachments to conex corners.

Since I get off on helping OTHERS work their *** off and spend THEIR money, if you can post a few pics of your container setup I can add you to my list of "victims" (insert demonic laugh track here  )

Potential differences from my setup I can imagine -

Roof pitch - mine's 2/12 pitch, we see MAYBE an inch or two of snow every few years - you might need a 12/12 pitch...

If your container's a 40', my mounting system might need some diagonal braces to be stable.

If you're willing/able to do a full coverage/steeper pitched roof, the much-reduced solar gain might negate the need for the vent (but a steeper pitch could mean NOT having to remove it)

Just some examples, gotta get back to "gator bashing" til it gets dark ('puter time is rest time for me  ... Steve

I'm in San Jose this week for work so I'll can grab some pics when I get back.
This thing is kind of shoe horned in, so aside from hiring a crane I'm pretty limited on mechanical help which is why I'm trying to keep this pretty small.
I also might be insulating and installing a mini split in the near future so covering the roof isn't all that important to me.
