Steel building contractor recommendations for NC

Looking to put up a 30x40 steel building, this would be a turnkey job — site prep, concrete and the building itself. The land is flat, accessible, and the ground seems stable, no drainage issues. Would appreciate recommendations for contractors to consider, the building would be located near Greenville NC.

Thanks

What type of metal building are you looking for? Tube steel, cold formed, red iron or weld up. Do you have plans to distribute for quotes?

Without plans you will get wildly different quotes. Those buildings are at the opposite ends of the price spectrum. Red iron will be 50%-80% higher than tube steel. Do you have a budget?

No I don’t because that’s not my part of the world. Having been a metal building contractor for twenty years I am trying to suggest what kind of information and questions that will make your project successful. The industry is full of dodgy characters that will take advantage of you in a minute. Most brokers on the internet with flashy websites don’t make anything and are working on a 30%-40% markup which is why they are quick to offer a discount because they will still make a good profit. Try to find a local contractor to work with if you can.

@redhead thanks

I’m trying to avoid the dodgy contractors from the git go. A google search brings up > 10 contractors who claim to build in NC I’d like to cull that list before visiting samples of their buildings etc.

The building will be combination hobby shop and storage shed, tubular construction will probably fill the bill, that said I want to look at other options to try to get to a best value solution. I won’t say money is no object but it’s not the only criteria.

It’s interesting times as Morton’s won’t even discuss an estimate before 2022, one other place I’ve been talking to is 6 months out, and they don’t do site prep. Estimates are only good for that day or a week at most due to volatility of steel prices.

I'm doing five day quotes right now. We are running 10-12 weeks out lead time. Check out Impact metal buildings from Metal Sales. More robust than tube steel and less expensive than red iron. Much more simple foundation also and the stamped foundation design is included with the building. You can find them on the Metal Sales web site.

I've mentioned this in other threads, too, but if you're opting for a turnkey I think I'd stay away from a cold-formed unless you can find an experienced contractor. I'm in the process of building my own 30x30 cold-formed and it's been challenging at times just trying to decipher the "instructions". An experience contractor (i.e. readhead) could put one of these together pretty readily, but I can't imagine a general contractor (as opposed to some random handyman hack you found on CL for instance) would have the time to invest with learning the system and dealing with the quirks required by one of these kits.

That's just the lesson that I've learned in building mine.

Zippy, you have found the flaw in the system. The plans and instructions are poor to the DIY crowd. They are working to improve that. If you have any questions PM me and I can probably help you out.

I appreciate it Andy, I really do. You've been helpful in some of your other PMs to me.

I'm pretty pumped too: I expect to finish my framing this very weekend! Been a long haul working on it evenings/weekends, and fixing a couple of minor screwups, but this phase is finally very close to wrapping up. :willy_nil

CaptPat, I'm putting up a 30 x 40 in Carthage NC, just a bit north of Pinehurst. It's turnkey and I am using a local contractor that does many steel buildings. I have no idea if he would work as far as Greenville, but he may be able to recommend someone if you're interested. Pics of my build are in a thread on here.

I'm in the same phase of a similar project, I live in Lexington, but my wife works in Moore County so know the area reasonably well, would be interested to check with your builder to see if he'll come this way, or has recommendations of who to work with.

Op. Looking to build a steel building in the same area mentioned. What type of building did you decide to go with? Currently looking a contractor for what I would prefer to be “turnkey” job. 40x60x16 red iron building. Thanks in advance!
