They make a great option, I believe. I have an old set that were take-outs from a remodel. Watch ebay, and your local trader-type newpapers. They come up every now and then. You might also want to check with a cabinet contractor, and have him watch for some take outs for you.
Those wood ones look like they worked out well, astroracer. Can't beat that price.
FYI, here are 3 of the 5 old steel kichen cabinets that I have in my current garage. They were in good physical condition. They got a thorough cleaning inside and out, all the hinges cleaned and oiled, and the chrome polished. Then I covered them in some inexpensive Rubbermaid off white matte finish contact paper (self adhesive vinyl), and bolted them to the wall.
Jim Walter homes used to use them in their bottom line homes years ago. Go by JWH and ask if they still use them. Who knows, they might even be able to get you some old ones cheap
