Steel Fire Pit

So one of my coworkers asked me to build him a steel fire pit. I asked him to give me a drawing with dimensions to build to but he said build it to what ever I want as long as its around 3'-4' wide. So Its 39" square, 20" tall and is made of 3/16" steel. Using my press brake I bent a 1.5" lip around the top edge to prevent possible distortion from the heat of fires. I drilled eight 1/2" holes for water drainage and is used for air also, I bent up some steel into a C channel to prevent hot embers from dropping to the ground but its still open for water and air to pass through.

Got the base welded out and added some round feet so it doesn't sink into the dirt. I had a little test fire before painting it with high heat paint.

To be honest I have no clue, I'm the same with math being strong suit. I just made a template out of wood of the size I wanted the pieces to be and just traced around the steel with the plasma cutter. The top of the template was 36" and the bottom was 18" and 16" tall so I just connected the dots to get the angle to cut.

Very nice fabrication, I would think it would easily last a lifetime Better of course if the owner had a 2 wheel truck and could haul it inside during the winter. What sort of tonnage do you estimate was needed to bend the 7ga/.187 sheet?

The pressure gauge on my press was reading between 1900-2000 psi, So that works out to being 54-56,000 lbs (27-28 tons). Interestingly the online calculators are showing I should need 23 tons to bend the .188" mild steel 37" wide with my die opening. But my gauges are saying I needed 5 tons more force, not that it really matters though.

That looks pretty slick! It sits square & flat, too. If I were to attempt such a thing, I can all but guarantee that I would have heat warped it to the point that only 3 feet would be on the ground at any given point.

Now it only needs a lid over the top, for winter storage.

Looks like I might be making a few more of these, possibly 5-10 more.

The 1/2" holes need to be bigger - ash will cover over that very easily unless you empty after every fire.

Nice job. I like what you did with the base.

I made something similar a few years ago, but without the lip around the top...I don't have a press brake.

To cut down on the welding, I made it all out of one big sheet...used the plasma cutter to chop out an iron cross looking shape, then on all the bends, used the plasma to perforate along the bend line. I probably removed about 1/2 the material, then folded the sides up. It worked well.
