Steel or nylon garage door rollers

Hi All,

One of my steel rollers spit out the bearings so it needs to be replaced.

Should I start replacing the rollers with the nylon ones? (almost twice the cost)

The door is 16' wide x 12' high and is very noisy and I'd like to smooth out things.

What kind of garage door opener do you have? If it is chain drive or screw drive most of the noise comes from there and the nylon rollers won't help much. I switched to a Chamberlain belt drive and the reduction in noise is astounding.

It's a chain drive of unknown make. Actually I think the previous owner(s) made it themselves.

Don't the nylon ones last longer? better made as they are sealed?

Just trying to make things better one step at a time so I don't have to start over when I think I have finished.

Most of the noise in my garage comes from the steel rollers that are older than dirt. If the nylon's reduce the squeeling as the door goes up id be willing to try them.

Squealing rollers? ....They need to be lubed once a year.
Mine are steel rollers on heavy 10'X12' doors and now are 22 years old and work well.
Plastic /nylon rollers...not sure how long they would last under the same conditions.

Can you bring them back from the dead with lube? I am not sure the previous owner ever lubed them. I don't plan on living here for more than like 5 years so I'll probably use whatever is cheapest to replace them.

Nylon rollers will quiet the door down and they do typically last longer.. If your opener is a chain drive and makes noise it's either not adjusted properly or the door is not balanced correctly.

All of my doors are nylon and they are great. One set of openers is belted, the other chain. Several folks have been shocked at how quiet the combo of belt drive and nylon rollers is.

If you buy a new premium door they come with nylon so they must be better. lol

Now I need to figure out which ones.

My wheel is 1 7/8" wide and that was what I was going to order until I read the reviews to find out the rail size is what you order and not the roller size.

I've seen several kinds of "nylon" rollers. Some (good ones) are almost like polyurethane, look like the Amazon ones but are not as hard as nylon. Cheap ones are black, hard plastic. Get the good ones.

My 2 car wide door had the cheap plastic rollers. They crumbled within a year.
Nylon ball bearing replacements are a great improvement. No noise aside
from the belt drive motor lift. Tracks are not oiled. Only the hinge/roller pins.
