I'm getting some material for my welding table and it dosent sound right, the guy quoted me $317 for two 24ft sticks of 3"x3"x3/16" square tubing and $350 for a 4'x8' sheet of 3/8th plate.
Does this sound right or is he way off? Thanks

I bought some square tube that was 2x2 by .125 wall and it was 100 for a 24ft stick, so that price for 3x3 does not seem that far off.

Plate is typically about $1 per pound, that plate will weight 489lbs if you figure 15.3 lbs per sqft so that is no bad.

Some of it depends on where you live. But some suppliers charge much more than others. In your shoes, I'd get at least three prices. And if you post your city here, other guys might be able to point you to a good supplier.

I just bought some 20' lengths of 1.25" square tubing, 16 ga. $11 each. But other suppliers around me would charge more than double that. I paid right around $300 for all the steel to make a 20'x20' pergola. I'm guessing it was somewhere around .50 or .60 per pound.

I would call around some more.

Some places have higher prices and really cater to the people who frequently buy from them, others have a low price whether you buy an inch or 200 ft.

Location, location, it really makes a difference. Do you have a steel recycler by you ?? Awesome deals can be had for around scrap prices.

I'm in ocala, fl
There's only a few around here that I know of but I will make a few calls on Monday before I go pick it up.
I also ended up with the wrong fitting on my torch so I need a new dinse connector for the dynasty.
Anybody know the best place to get an adaptor or the dinse to make the larger ck fitting plug into a dynasty?

By comparison to what I pay, that is incredibly cheap...

3x3x1/8 here dents my wallet about $32 a metre. That makes 24' worth over $250 each, and the plate that size would savage my wallet about $400-450

That sounds crazy high. I know what i bought was thinner, but i paid 70 bucks for 40' of 1x1x.06 and 20' of 2x2x.06. I dont see it costing me more than 50 bucks per 20' for what you are needing. But like said, location is everything.

I'm paying around 54 cents per pound for channel iron angle iron and bar stock.

Square and rectangular tubing is going for around 66 cents per pound.

Hot rolled sheet and plate is somewhere in between.

That's near Vancouver, British Columbia.

What he said. I pay $0.35 a lb for recycled plate and $0.75 a lb for new steel. The sheet of 3/8 tread plate I just bought set me back $150 and some change for a 5x10 ft sheet.

I'm lucky that I live near ship yards so my scrap yard literally has hundreds and hundred of perfectly good plates.

I just bought about $400 worth of misc structural steel from Contractors Steel in Detroit and it was $.75 per pound, and they delivered the material.

4x8 for a solid surface welding table top? That seems a bit TOO big since you won't be able to reach in comfortably to the middle of it for any sort of welding.

I think I'd be tempted to cut that into a pair of 2x4 or 2x6 tables on casters. Maybe make one a solid surface and the other open mesh or bar stock. Push them together for larger surface area, or spread them apart to support larger projects like you would with saw horses. Plus it would be much cheaper.

I want to replace a steel workshop bench that is awesome, but not what I can really use with the pair of 2x4 cart ideas instead.

Price is right, but I have to ask, why do you need to use 3/16 wall? You can make a very heavy duty frame out of 14 gauge. 14 gauge will easily support your steel top. Would drop an easy 100 bucks off the bill.

I do lots of fabbing, if I can get away from handling the heavy stuff, I'm gonna do it.

$0.50/lb for plate steel here from Sligo Steel (wholesale, but will sell full sheets or full sticks to the public). I was just quoted $250 for a 4x8 of 3/8" steel plate.

The price of steel is fluctuating more than gas. Like Jack said, you have to get 3 different quotes.

The prices are changing so much that on a lot of quotes we do, we have a disclaimer in there on the steel price. In some cases, we tell them that if the cost goes over a certain amount, then the customer has to pay the difference.

A lot also depends on what they have in stock. If they have it laying around...your price will be better...but if they have to go get it....cost goes up....

The cost of gas is having a bigger impact on those prices now.

I called a few places and they were around the same and I had already ordered the steel so I just went and picked it up. I want a 4x8 table so I can use it as a multi purpose. I don't want to have to worry about something falling off or not being big enough for the job.
I made the frame last night, I need to add a brace on the legs and weld on the plates for the casters tonight or tomorrow. I'll post some pics tonight

I got some price quotes a couple weeks ago. A 2x3 1/8" tube was $78 for a 24' stick. A 2x2 1/8" tube was $50 for a 24' stick.
A piece of 1/2" plate cut to 3'x5' was $323.

Not exactly what you want to order...but just an idea...
