Does anyone have information as to what steel angle iron and flat steel plate is going for? I am trying to purchase some from outside a retailer but dont have any idea what to offer.

2x2 angle iron
1/4" mild steel plate
1/2" mild steel plate

I'd appreciate some input.

Thank you.

In small quantities I pay $.60 - $.80 per pound for material like that from my local steel supplier.

Are you talking about new material or scrap or drop.

We are getting about 15-18 cents a pound for our mild steel drop/scrap.

New plate we are paying about 65 cents per pound for mild steel

Structural shapes we pay about 82 cents per pound for mild steel

Sweet. Making the occasional small online orders will save me lots of time. Have you used them before?

I've used https://www.metalsdepot.com/ after comparing them extensively with onlinemetals.com and a couple of other sites (including mcmaster). At the end, the pricing at metalsdepot was similar to the others but their shipping was less - which probably had more to do with where they are located relative to South Carolina. It took them a few days to ship the order but the freight shipping was cost effective and the materials great. I ordered cold roll sheet steel and some aluminum bar from them last time.

Check if you have a Dillon Supply nearby. The one in Raleigh has a huge steel shop and can also cut anything you order.

http://www.dillonsupply.com/

Only pain is their prices aren't marked as they change constantly with the price of steel and the order desk can be very busy at times.

The prices at Dillon versus what I just checked at those two other websites are WAY cheaper. I paid about 1/4 of what Metal Depot was asking. Perhaps they jack up their prices to cover shipping.

Steel is priced on the world market, so local made steel in my country is the same as in the USA when you factor exchange rates and taxes [and shipping if applicable ]

Also all steel is sold by its weight. [ approx. 7.85 kg per sq metre per mm thickness] or 7.85 metric tons per cubic metre.

unfortunately my measurements are in metric so you need to down load a steel sections weight table.

Then try and find a steel merchant that gives you a favourable price per lb [or kg ]

Then it is easy to work out, before you make an offer.

At Onlinemetal.com, you pay more for the convenience than you do for the actual metal.
