I need to find a new 7/8" thick rod for this press......I assume solid will be the strongest

What type of steel?

Stainless steel or no?

I see I can get solid rod in MANY types:
Cold rolled 12L14 Steel
Chrome Moly 41L40 Steel
H13 Tool Steel
1144 Fatigue Proof Steel
4130 Steel Rod
8620 Alloy Steel Rod
4140/4142 Steel Rod

That's what, a 6 ton? Nice! They're still in business. Whats a new arm cost? 36: 1 leverage?

I bet the factory uses something cheap like 1045. I have had good luck with 4340 or 5160. 8620 is for case hardened transmission shafts. 4130 isnt that strong for the dollar premium. I have never used the others.

I would use something simple like 1045. Or pretty much any .040 to .050% carbon steel. I would avoid 300 series stainless.

Got a rosebud for the acetylene torch? Heat it up and straighten it. Only if it appears to have caused it to weaken, then get a new one.

BTW, I have a Drake also. Very similar to that size. Very handy!

No torch, and the lever is twisted all over and bent up good

I would use any of the 41xx series steels or cheap 1xxx series. Don't bother with stainless; it isn't as strong as the cheapest carbon steel. Don't bother with the leaded steels either: they rust faster than non-leaded steels. Leaded steels have an "L" in the middle of the alloy number. Lead makes the alloy machine nicer but won't help in your application.

Stress proof should be fine but then again with 3 feet you will be able to put some serious gronk on any shaft.

Wouldn't tubing be stronger then something solid? I have a solid digging bar that I can bend. The one I made is tubing and I can't bend it. Not yet I haven't.

Very good point

Which will have the least amount of deflection, solid or tube (HREW, DOM, etc)

Tensile Strength: 87,000 PSI
Yield Strength; 72,000 PSI

Still seems like solid 1144 is stronger

I would just put 1018 in there. All my arbor presses have that. Imo, if you have to hang from the press arm then you need a bigger press, rather than a medium carbon steel shaft...

Still not what 1144 can offer

The smallest is 0.058 wall. Being the 0.156 wall that is almost 3 times the thickness.:eyecrazy: I don't know the strength of steel and wall thickness but something tells me if something is almost 3 times as thick. It should be a lot stronger. Good luck. I will keep watching this thread to learn.

Don't use tubing (DOM or welded) unless you want to do this task all over again. For any given alloy, solid is stronger than a shape. Any of the low carbon 101x, 1144 or 41xx are fine with a 7/8ø shaft.

Leaded steel is what makes it machinable,, great if your miling pockets, less good if your using it a a lever
Though 1144 (Stressproof-equivalent) steel is an exception as it is very machinable, but does not have the lead.

Id order a hunk of 4130 or 4340 cold rolled Normalized bar and be done with it.

There's always the issue of how long to make the press-arm. Longer is of course easier when you get up to the max press capability, straight mechanical advantage...you could look up the press arm length originally, its most likely in a listing. You could reverse engineer the length via a math calculation (moment balance), assume a 200lb load at the end of the arm. Need to get close to the pitch diameter of the pinion, I'd just measure the OD of the gear and the inner diameter of the tooth undercut and average to get close enough.

12L14 is a mistake because it rusts before your eyes.

I can pretty much guarantee the OEM didn't put a 4140 shaft on there.

I'd think you could come close to owning a complete 12' shaft of 7/8" dia in 1018 for $31 from a steelyard. That calculates to ~24# of steel, $1. per lb is a reasonable rate at present for full sticks, and involves no labor to cut the bar or inventory the drop. Iow, custom cut and the yard "eats" the drop, typically you pay for the entire 12' stick and when they sell the rest its pure profit.

The solid steel lever arrived yesterday, and it is NICE!! Made from 1144, it is 7/8" diameter and 32" long. Both ends are drilled and tapped 1/2-20, about 1-1/2" deep

All steels will deflect about the same regardless of hardness or carbon content. However, soft steels with lower yield strength will go into permanent plastic deformation much sooner than tool steels.

Now that you have your press working, straighten your old handle just as a learning exercise.

I suggest you find a burning specialist company that does CNC oxyfuel cutting for a living. Have them cut you a platen which you design. While you're at it, design a few others with lots of slot sizes and have them make them all. Very handy to have a good selection of slots.
