Steel Storage Rack Critique

I built a new shop over the summer and I'm slowly moving in.

I copied a design for some steel storage racks I found on another forum and had a buddy of mine whip me up a couple of them. I was convinced they would be plenty strong, but when I started loading up the steel, I started to doubt myself.

They are made from laser cut 3/16" steel and formed on a press brake. Installed using eight 3/8" x 4" lag bolts in each rack, in which I drilled 9/32" pilot holes. The posts are 5" x 5" treated pine.

If they were loaded completely with the tubing pictured, the load distribution per lag bolt would be about 40 lbs.

So, what do yall think? Will they hold?

I think they'll hold, but if your really worried you could always double up on the bracket (2 per post, side by side).

I like those clean MC runs and the SWAG saw mount too.

They look strong enough. You'll find out soon enough, if they're going to fail, it would be soon after loading them up.

That's pretty neat!

If you're worried about them bending at all, you can always have him cut the openings at a different angle and give you more of a cross-section on your gusset. This leaves you with a smaller opening, and less storage, but it's piece of mind.

They look pricey too lol.

You paint, or powdercoat them?

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I guess I needed the reassurance since I was having illusions of them crashing down on top of everything.

Thanks. I had never used MC before but I'm a fan now. The SWAG Portaband mount is pretty sweet. I've got several of their products. Actually, I stole the storage rack idea from them. They posted them on Pirate4x4 but apparently decided not to sell them.

They are powder coated.

I know for a fact that one single 3/8 lag bolt will hold 215 lbs.(my weight). And that was a horizontal pull. You will shear the bolts before they will pull out. BTW nice brackets, but don't tell your buddy how much we all love them. He'll grow an ego and you'll never hear the end of it.:)

Just noticed after looking over the pics again. Shed. 80 pipe? You a steam fitter?

I'm thinking the pipe weighs 2x what I first estimated, but you're still good.

The proof is in the pictures. They seem to be holding just fine. Nice clean storage. Question is, they look full now, where's the cut pieces going?

Yeah, they're pretty full right now. I just got in 288' of tubing for a chassis I'm building for someone. Most of it will be used and there will be little waste. It probably won't have that much steel on it at all times.

No pipe fitter here. Most of the tubing in the pics is 1.75" x .120" DOM tubing that I'll be using to build the chassis mentioned above. It weighs about 2.2 lbs/ft. The thick wall tubing you see in the pics is a short piece of 1.5" x .331" DOM tubing.

Any chance of me being able to buy some of those? maybe Qty.3 or 4? I'm somewhat local to you in Carencro.

I followed your build on Pirate and looks like all the work you do is top notch. We need to plan a wheeling trip!

You ask if 40 lbs per lag bolt will hold? I am saying "yes it will". One lag bolt would support my body weight with no problems... so 40 lbs should be easy.;)
