Does anyone know anything of the history of this company I have just acquired some whitworth spanners I believe they are of German origin

the manufactuer of the "Steinadler" branded tools was "Kurt vom Stein + Co" from Germany. The brand name was registered in 1920 and deleted in 2001. That´s all i can find.

Here's my Steinadler adjustable wrench with the sliding middle jaw so you have a choice of toothed or flat jaws. I've posted photos of it in the "Show your adjustables" thread before.

I think there is some kind of restriction on this site requiring 10 posts before you can post photos. This is what I recall when I joined. Time to make some small talk (you only need 3 more posts).

I still like using imageshack, a free hosting service you can upload to and then just copy and paste the links. This way you have quick access to your photos if you wish to use them again anywhere else.

The offset box ends look comparable to any other decent wrench from the era. What are the sizes? The adjustable is too small a photo to make any assessments.

I did find a brief article on Steinadler some weeks back - can't seem to find it now. Seems that they were in business for just under 50 years before they ceased the manufacture of hand tools, spanners, etc. Looks like the name may translate as 'Golden Eagle'. There are a number of firms, unrelated, currently using that name, one is a hiking/ camping shop; another manufactures machinery which cuts large blocks of stone.

Here's my one and only Steinadler spanner, found at a 'trash and treasure' market. It's well used, the chrome plating is peeling (ouch !) but the machining marks are still on the
jaws. 18 and 19 m/m. Bound to fit something on the Jawa, but too big for the toolkit.

Thanks for that interesting history lesson! Some names I hadn't heard of.
I am surprised that they didn't catch the typo for the start of Hazet as 1868, not 1968 -only 100 years off.
