Step Stool/Ladder

I am sick and tired of working on something and the pos Rubbermaid step stool I'm standing on slides out from underneath me. Then my chest and stomach scrape the hood latch or radiator support.... Eff that I'm done. What can I buy that will last and stay in place? I need something with rubber feet that won't kick out when I'm leaning in. It also has to work on slight incline in some cases. I'd love to have a topside creeper, but they're too expensive and I don't have anywhere to keep it right now. Oh, I have plenty of milk crates and 5 gallon buckets...

I was thinking one of those wide, aluminum drywall step stools maybe?

I just bought another Werner AP-30 pro deck work platform. They work perfect for multiple uses. Use mine to look in top of tool box and when working on the trucks. Looked at the Harbor Freight one for $19.99, it was a piece of junk.

I have essentially the same thing and it has been perfect for so many different situations. I also have a 3 step folding mini ladder/step stool that I found at costco and I wish I would have 2 more.

My wife bought one of those for herself because she is more vertically challenged than I. We took it to my son's house to paint a bedroom. WOW !! So much better than an old fashioned step ladder. Those extra wide step really are easy on the feet and lower leg muscles. I did need to rig something up to secure the roller pan to the big shelf, but it is now the official painting 3 step stool.

I guess, after almost 40 year of home ownership, I have more than the average number of climbing devices. A 6' wood step ladder and a 10' aluminum. A Werner 17' telescoping multi-function ladder. Two 3 step stools. Two 2 step stool. Four 1 step stools (3 for little kids to wash their hands at the bathroom sink and 1 for me to see into the top of my tool box since I added a middle chest). Last, one of those 1950s counter height chairs with the 2 flip out steps (like new).

That's the kind of thing I thought of first in response to OPs request. Don't have any idea what the brand was, but when I worked at my uncle's boat shop he had a few step stool things like that and they were ****** useful for everything and didn't slide out from under me when I was on them.

Too much work. I need it to fold up for storage. I do have a few 2' step ladders, one aluminum and one wood, but I want something with a wide platform length and width. What's the link for the HF one?

I have 2 of the ap30s and there are probably 10 or so of them in the heavy equipment shop where I work. They are great tools. They hold up pretty well to dropping heavy parts and being overloaded.

I just bought my second one at lowes for 44 bucks, but I think that sale ends today.

A side note, I also use mine for dog training, they make great platforms to teach place with.

Get 2 plastic milk crates (if the REAL ones still exist, not the **** that IKEA sells) and 2 - 8' 2x6s. Join them along the long edge using construction adhesive and pocket screws.

I have a similar 3 Step Stool. I have had it for years and love it.

For cars or the like when i have to reach in front, I have a work platform similar to the Werner that I got at Menards, on sale was about $20

I have two of the Werner ones and one I got from Costco but is no longer available. The Costco one is BY FAR the best. Super sturdy, comes with grip tape already on it. The legs lock automatically, it is significantly more sturdy than the Warners.
I use all three of them a whole lot. The frame machine in our shop sits pretty high. ( I hate it )
The only issue is a very minor one is I have short legs. 30 inch inseam. It is not that it is a big step up, but just bigger than what would come naturally to me.
I guess...

I have had one of these for quite awhile. I wouldn't have bought it myself, but my boss gave them to several of us. I'm glad he did. It works great. Good height for standing while working under the hood of my Broncos. Feels plenty stable. The steps on the ends are handy for my old stiff self. Also good for minor sawhorse type duty. I'd recommend it.

That's funny. Neither of us would have thought it to be needed, but both use it a lot. If mine disappeared I would definitely replace it.

Only problem, it's about 12" too tall to be comfortably used on a truck at normal height. Maybe something with a 6" lift kit would work, but a standard car or truck is just too low. Still a solid platform and at that price, who cares. I will use it for a lot of other things.

I have this but the 3ft wide one it's nice. Goes the whole width of the hood. I had the one posted above and kept stepping off it and it pissed me off

I have 2 of the Gorilla platforms from the past couple HD BF's at $17 ea, but as OP discovered they're too tall for most under hood work. The platforms are intended for drywall and ceiling work.
