It looks like there are four different head types, and head thicknesses. Yours almost looks like a New Britain type with those snap rings.

I blew up the picture of directional button and can see end of a spiralock snap ring around smooth cap. I will have to find a small screwdriver and take it apart later.

Yes there is a spiralock around the center button on that style

Once the center cap is removed, there is a larger spiralock that will release the whole mechanism

I came up with a few similar pieces in a tool box advertised in a local on-line live auction. Won these, and a plethora of other alloy steel treasures for the opening bid. I certainly don't "****" as much as 3baygarage did in the above thread, but I'm tickled pink nonetheless. 16pcs altogether in terrific clean condition. Now, on to finding the rest of the set at obscene pricing. :scared:

3bay, that is a you ****. Reminds me of a similar looking Billings set I found at a estate sale a while ago as well. The way it looks appears that it was tucked away and forgotten about, no way a regularly used tool can keep a shine like that. Thrill of the hunt that we all crave.

I was at an estate sale before the "plague" brought things to a halt. There were elements of a prewar New Britain 1/2 drive set scattered across a workbench, so I collected them in a cardboard box. I negotiated a lot price on these items and many others, but the place was so disorganized, I made another pass around the open-framed garage. On a cross-brace way above the bench, I noticed a black metal box with a leather handle. Taking it down, it looked like it would be the box for the NB set, and the sellers threw it in with my lot. It did indeed prove to be the original box for the set!
