Got this off the bay for my dad's Christmas gift, as I caught him drooling over a beat-up and wildly overpriced example at a swap meet earlier this year. This one is in very good condition! Thought I'd share.

Very cool.
I got one of those from a member here some time back - was it you?
I don't have that cool blue and yellow can though!

It wasn't me. Thanks for the nice words.

You put that rubber tip on the back side against the middle of a rotating device, like a pulley, and it spins the tach.

The graphics on that can are very cool. :)

Thanks for the explanation Stuart. I was surprised how good of shape the tin was in...a cool display piece for sure!

Cool!

I worked in a parts store long ago. We had one of those, but from another mnfr I think - possibly AC-Delco? It was new in the box, and had been on the shelf since the store was put in it looked like.

Still kick myself for not buying it. The manager probably would have given it to me if I had asked.

Nice SW tach Dave. I still have the one we used to check rpm on crusher and conveyor shafts on crushing plants. It spent many years in a service truck. The can is a little beat up but the tach is no worse for wear. It's been around since at least the mid 70's when I first started. I use it to check lathe rpm fairly often. Coincidentally I picked up a 2nd one for $10 at a swap meet this weekend. The new can is in a little better shape than on my old one. Both my cans are red and yellow. I don't remember ever seeing one with blue graphics. Ed.

There are quite a few AC branded hand tachs on eBay. They look a lot smaller than the SW but also look harder to read.

Ed, there are a few examples of both on eBay now. If I had to guess, I'd say the blue tins are older. If you notice the faces on yours are slightly different from mine as well...mine has fancy script Stewart-Warner, and yours has the SW in a square.

This is from the Summit Racing website, and it applies to Stewart-Warner automotive gauges, but I would imagine the logos on the cans followed the same time periods:

A plain face, smooth bezel, and a crescent moon pointer were made for military and industrial uses between 1946 and 1960.
The "Wings" logo was used between 1948 and 1954.
The large "SW" logo was used between 1955 and 1957.
The small "SW" logo was introduced in the 1960's and is the most common style gauge.

Heck yes, thanks Stuart!!!

That's awesome. You're a good kid. (Jeez I'm getting old).

Haha my dad is 69 and I'm 34. Not a kid anymore, but I suppose I'll always be his kid.
