Hi,looking for info on the above chainsaw ignition coil. Number marked on side of coil is 8 364. Believe this coil is breaking down after about 10-15 minutes of use. Shut it off and will not restart. Let the saw cool for about 15 minutes and it restarts. Purchased an identical one and it does the same thing. Looking on line for a replacement coil they look to be different as connections are different. OEM ones look identical to mine but used and possibly bad too. Is there a direct replacement I can buy? Thanks.

That saw was made between 1984 and 1990. First year or so it had points and condenser under the flywheel, then an engineering change put an electronic trigger module under the flywheel along with a part number change to the flywheel, then later yet another part number change to the flywheel with a self contained CDI module with nothing under the flywheel. I show the 0000 400 1306 CDI still available from STIHL at around $70. Heat soak failure can happen with older modules where they run ok as long as the flywheel is blowing air but heat soak when the engine stops, lose spark, then "heal" after cooling down. Only way to prove that is with an inline spark tester that you can observe if spark goes away after sitting for a few minutes. Stay away from aftermarket modules unless you are lucky at gambling. And while I enjoy some of my older saws from time to time the new ones are far superior and I personally wouldn't put that much money in a saw that old. I have one of that model in my collection along with all the other model variations in that series, and it is a proud shelf sitter, not a saw I would ever want to cut with. But I wish you luck whichever way it goes.
Hi appreciate the input. I will test the spark output on the second saw I bought after I run it. The heat soak makes sense as they both operate the same way. Would explain why they restart after cooling down a bit. I tried to read resistance of the coil from the first saw that I removed and it reads open. No resistance. I have not removed the coil from the second saw I purchased yet so will test that one with a spark tester after running it a bit. Appreciate the input.

Spark tester is a nice thing to have but timing lights can be found for a few dollars at yard sales everywhere. You just need an external battery to power it.

I have a lot of stihl demo saws & chain saws & recently have found a similar issue. Saw start & runs intermittently, looked like coil, replaced same problem. Good compression, clean carb everything checked out. By chance I pulled the flywheel, turned out to be a broken woodruff key, worn down. Replaced it & the saw fired right up. Had another saw TS410 waiting to get repaired, same problem. Not sure if this helps but can't hurt to check.
Cannot hurt to check. I have had that issue with lawn mowers I repair for a folks. They hit something and then the next thing you know it starts acting up because the key bent. And I have a timing light that I can use to check for spark. Good idea. Thanks.
