Trying to start an older ( 20-30 yrs. older ) Sthil Chain Saw.
Starts briefly then quits.
New gas, Cleaned carb New plug and all that stuff.
has Tillitson carb marked "HL166A" with two adjustment screws
marked "H" and "L"
Does anyone out there know the default settings for these adjustment screws?
Photos of the saw are at-

So I saw you had another thread about this, but I thought I would ask something in this one. The normal procedure for starting a saw for me is as follows.

1) Choke pulled all the way out, pull start cord until saw fires. It won't run with the choke all the way out probably.

2) Set choke to 1/2 way out and pull start cord. The saw should start and idle fast.

3) Pull trigger to shut off the choke, and the saw should be idling normally.

If you are leaving the choke in the full position after it fires the first time, that could very likely be your problem. I would think that if the saw was running when it was put away, that the carb adjustments should be set correctly. I think I read someone in your other thread recommend starting with the screws set out 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 turns from closed.

Pretty much the same here.
Full choke till it fires then half choke and it will start on a fast idle then let the choke fully off.

brucercolbert. What model saw is it as a matter of interest?
edit, looks like a 08s to me.

Try replacing the fuel hoses. They get brittle and crack. But that's just the easy thing to try first - you will probably need to rebuild the carb. The old saws don't really like the new gas all that much.

I would personally be curious what his starting procedure is before he tears anything else apart.

When you say that it starts briefly and then quits, do you mean that it runs for only a few seconds or a few minutes? If it is a few seconds, then the carb is probably still clogged up. If it runs for a few minutes, the fuel tank vent is probably clogged.
