I've got a Dyson v6 in the house that's sucked up all sorts of ****, sawdust, drywall dust, ashes etc. They're not REALLY a shop vac though and you'll need to be diligent about cleaning/changing the filters if you use it heavily on shop type debris or you might burn it up. But they're surprisingly powerful.

I have all Makita including a cordless drill and impact driver. I got the mini chainsaw without batteries and most recently I got their stick broom without batteries. I like it for the exact reasons the OP stated.

We have a Dyson (don't recall the model, probably 10 years old) and the battery life is horrible, always has been. What's the experience of the other Dyson owners?

When the battery gets low and shuts itself off STOP. Don't use it for the 10 second increments you can get out of it to vac a bit more. This is what KILLS your battery.

Recharge it. I bought a replacement clone off eBay with good results.

I would be cautious about using a Dyson like a ShopVac. I used my Dyson V7 to clean up after mounting some concrete anchors in the basement and it became completely clogged up and wouldn't stay on. I had to remove the filter and soak it for a full 24h to get the vacuum working again.

I wouldn't use mine as a shop vac, but understand that dragging a shop vac out to clean up a small mess is annoying. I have used it to try and vacuum out vehicles, and it just doesn't have the power I like.

Do you have a brand? I've seen some of these knock offs and the price is sure tempting.

How much space do you have to clean?

I mounted one of these on my garage wall and can reach almost anywhere in the garage with it, oddly sized 31x21'. I find it much handier than a cordless vac with a lot more suction. Quieter than a normal shop vac as well.

I liked it so much I bought another one for my pole barn (almost finished), one for my basement, and one for my parents' garage.

Ours never held a charge for more than a few minutes of use. It wasn't a matter of not stopping when it needed recharge, abusing the battery as you suggest. It just didn't work well, I remember being highly disappointed for what we paid.

I can't remember if this clone was eBay or Amazon. I realize of course that results may vary but I have had good luck with this one.

We have a Shark, bought it on Woot on sale a while back, it gets TONS of use around our house with a lot of hard flooring and dogs.

Son and DIL have a new Dyson, $700 of or so, really nice, but I can't justify the $500 difference over the Shark.

In our previous condo I used our Dyson stick vac to clean up a good bit of drywall dust. As described above it REALLY clogged up the filters and coated the inside. It took quite a while (along with replacing the filters) before it would work normally without shutting off due to too much pressure drop. Sawdust was more forgiving.

If you plan on using the full dyson stick vac to vacuum floors (as opposed to just using the crevice tool directly on the vac), note that the two plastic "wheels" aren't really that durable and will get eaten up pretty quick if you're rolling it around on bare concrete.

I just replaced the battery in our 2.5 year old V7.

I bought a knock-off for $32 from Amazon rather than the $100 one from Dyson. I KNOW I'll get longer life from three knock-offs than I will from the oem which has already proven to be weak.

Just picked up the ryobi stick came with 1 4amp battery, so far it works good. I like that I have extra batteries always charged, plus the power head seems pretty good & it was only 149.

I've had the Makita stick vacuum for a few years now and it is perfect for minor dirt pickups, bug and spider catching, hairballs, dust bunnies, cleaning stairs, etc. For any major grage cleanup I would just use my Rigid shop vac.

Got one too. It’s a great vac, only con is non cyclonic dirt chamber. It’s a beast otherwise.

Just thought I would ask and bring up a old thread.
I have a Dyson V7 stick vac. that is 2.75 years old in need of a battery
It sits a lot in its charging station and rarely gets used, went to use it for a quick pick up and battery will not power it.
As I look for a battery Dyson wants $100 and knock offs are near half of that.

Some members have said that they bought the no name brand replacements and was wondering about feed back on the replacements.
Any brands better than others or stick with Dyson
Thanks for your comments

I have a Makita 18v and it works nice but the cloth prefilter plugs up fast. I just use it round the house for quick clean up when I don't wanna drag the corded vac out.

Thanks for the comment but I was looking for a replacement battery that doesn't cost a 1/3 of a new vacuum.
As I said that I have ordered a replacement battery from Dyson because every review I read about after market Chino do not last and are not really rated that high on power ( even if they say they are)

We have one of the dyson ones. It works well around the house, but I wouldn't dream of trying to use it in the shop.

We have a V6 cordless at home, I absolutely love it so when I saw my mother-in-laws Dust Buster from 1992 was only lasting 30 seconds we bought her a V6 as well. I don't know why, but her battery died after about 15 months. She bought a replacement on Amazon and said it has longer run time now than when it was new. Ours is kept on a wall mount charger 24/7 and I rarely have to vacuum long enough to run the battery down.

The replacement battery is in and running the vac.
Now that I have a extra battery I'm going to attemp tho repair it.

I just found a youtube video. for diassembling the DYSON battery and testing it
After struggling to get it apart, test with DVOM shows that all 5 cells are around 4.1V each and with in .03 volt difference
go to measure the group of cells and get a total of 20.5.
3rd measurment is to measure from the battery pack to the contacts on the circuit board get a total of .2V
need a circuit board!
found circuit board on Ebay out of Boston for $12
It's worth a try for that small amount will keep you posted.

We have a Dyson V6 that’s 4-5 years old and works great with hard surface floors. It’s got pretty decent power but holding capacity would be a bigger issue if trying to use it for sawdust. After vacuuming two floors mine is pretty full of dog hair

Received the replacement circuit board from E-bay 2 days ago
Spent time Wednesday opening the old battery pack removing the old circuit board and soldering in new one
Had to remove (cut out )thermal sensor off the support frame of the battery pack it was interfering with the new CB sitting flush ( new component sits on the bottom of the board.
Works ! will hold charge over night unplugged and didn't burn down the house.
I do have the new (replacement) battery in the vac. and after charging it before using it and then left off the charger overnight it lt drained over night.
Reading the from the Dyson web site it states that the battery is designed to stay on the charger at all times when not in use.
