Hello,

I have a question in regards to a Stihl BG 55 blower I have. I noticed it had a metal rattling sound on idle and when you rev it up. I rev all the way up; wide open. After a little while I quit hearing the noise. Cut the blower off when he was done with it. Needed to do a little more work so I picked it up and it cranked right off the bat then all of a sudden, it died.

I done a crankcase flush and there was a little metal debris in it. I just tried to crank it and it wouldn't crank after alot of pulling. The spark arrest screw is clean, but I took it out anyway to see what would happen. I pulled the rope a couple of times and it started but when I tried to give it gas to continue running it quit.

I noticed when I took the muffler off earlier, that the gasket between the muffler and exhaust was a little ship away on both sides of the screw. Also, there was a little rubber material on the other side of the screw but I guess it burned off? Any ideas why won't stay running? Air leak? Thank you.

It sounds like you may have multiple issues with the blower.

Concerning the rattling sound, you mentioned you pulled the muffler. The muffler may be loose. Did it rattle before you pulled the muffler? The fasteners for those mufflers can be difficult to torque down correctly without stripping the aluminum threads.

As far as the engine dying I would think the spark arrestor is clogged, which you said you checked, or the carb needs adjusting and cleaning.

How old is the blower? Did it sit unused for a while with fuel in it? Do you use ethanol-free or treated fuel?

if it will idle but not accelerate you most likely have a carburetor related issue, if it will run at full throttle but not idle you most likely have an air leak. as for the rattle can you shake the blower and hear it without it running that may help lead to a clue as to what it is.

How old is it? Have you changed your fuel filter? Had a similar problem with a BR320 that was solved with a $6 fuel filter. The other easy thing to check is spark plug. If your plug is good and fuel filter is new, and you still have problems, you can buy a carb rebuild kit. The carb has a rubber gasket that can turn leathery, but easy enough to replace it. If you need to address the carb, may as well clean it at the same time. Lots of good stuff on Youtube to help with that.
