stihl fs 56 trimmer

does anyone have a stihl fs 56 trimmer that they've had to replace the pull start on? i have the unit apart but every time i put it back together theres slack on the line. i cant figure out how to get rid of it and ive tried several times.

You need to preload the recoil spring under the rope rotor. First pull some of the rope out until you feel some tension and look for a notch in the rope rotor. Then holding the rotor with your thumb pull the rope back though the housing and into the notch. Next carefully wind the rotor a few times and pull the rope back though the housing. And ALWAYS wear your SAFETY GLASSES when doing this because if the recoil spring comes out of the rotor it's like a BOMB.

My Stihl dealer sells a complete assembly with a new rope handle spring and housing for like $20. Every time I have tried to manually replace just the spring I always have a inch of rope between the handle and inlet
