Got a Stihl MS250 chainsaw for free a little while ago. Had a crack in gas tank/motor housing. Replaced the housing, filled gas and bar chain oil, fired up on the 4th pull. Have felled and cut up 6 trees with it so far.

We have MS290 and MS 291's at work and I have a MS271 w/ 20 inch bar at the house. Fantastic saws. At work and home both, it's nothing but motomix fuel and stihl bar oil. Zero issues.

I just can't believe the guy gave it away just because the housing was cracked. Took all of $30 and some time to swap it out. Really liking it so far.

Sometimes I can believe it although not for an expensive saw like yours; I have an old weed wacker and the gas tank leaks gas from a crack, to replace it is super easy all of two minutes...But the cost to get a replacement tank is $$$$ over the top expensive so I use it with the leak only I do not fill it with much gas.

So I can see sometimes why people throw things away not good in my book but I can see their point of view.

Can I try?

Nice score!

I bought a new MS250 with a 16" bar about five years back for homeowner use. I've brought down and cut up a few dozen trees with it, the largest being about 24" diameter. It still runs like new. The only parts I've needed to replace so far were the bar and chain, due to wear.
