still cant unload toolbox

i bought a toolbox a few months back from matco for a lot of money

i never used it, as the job i ended up taking has built in toolboxes

now i have a brand new matco tool box to sell and i cant find anyone to take it off my hands for half the price i paid

any ideas where i can sell it?

Unfortunately, in this economy, there are literally dozens of people every week trying to sell their Snap-On, Matco, MAC, etc. tool boxes for pennies on the dollar. Craigslist is the ultimate example of supply and demand. The supply is really high right now and the number of people willing to drop several thousand on a tool box is VERY low, that makes the value of your box on the "used" market, unfortunately, much less than what you paid. If the economy keeps going the way it is... who can tell...

Depends on how bad you want to sell it. With the economy the way it is people can't afford to fork over a lump sum of money for a box so you'll have to either take a mighty hit on it, or...If you don't absolutely have to sell it right now you can sit on it until someone who's serious comes along.

To give you an idea, I blew $1,000 on a red Matco 4 this last month that was still in the crate. The original owner decided that he wanted to be a plumber instead of a mechanic, and sold me the box for what he had owed on it.

I am sure that this is the 4 series, with the double bank config. I think I'll repaint it a light, powder blue this summer. )

X2 on the suggestion to ask the Matco truckie to take it back. Since it is still in the crate, he should be able pay $1000-1500 and eventually make money re-selling it.

On a side note, I've been shopping for tools in classified, nickle nik, garage sales and auctions for forty years. These days, I check craigslist morning, noon and night. Mentally, I rate each ad I read, as:
1. Screaming deal - crank the truck!
2. OK deal for someone who needs one
3. No deal - won't ever sell at that price
4. Clueless about the item and/or lacking basic literacy competence

The batting average of how long the ad stays up is pretty high. The other helpful hint - if at all interested in the item, throw out a lowball cash offer. More than once I've ended up with a great deal after the would-be seller got an education on the realities of the market.

If it were me and you have the room to store it. Just keep it. You will need to do work at home sooner than you think and having tools at home is a really good thing.

buying toolboxes retail is never a good deal, I bought my macsimizer 1350 for less than 25% of retail. My brother got his matco for less than 20% of retail. ***** for the sellers, kicks *** for buyers with cash to spend. And a pro box that doesnt retail for more than $5500 isnt really what most guys looking to drop cash on a used box are looking for.

It's a beautiful setup, but he's just not going to get anything close to 2 grand for it. I've never seen him drop his price either.

There was another ad for the exact same setup, same box, same color, recently. IIRC, the guy was asking $1600, then dropped it to $1200. After I saw it at $1200, the ad disappeared within a couple of days. If I had a need for it, I would've jumped on it for that price.

You keep seeing problems within solutions. Focus on what you want to happen and work toward that. Tell your Matco tuckie, "Worried about loading? You just back the truck up, hand me the check and I'll get it on the truck for you."

Never hesitate to suggest you may go over the local guy's head. Gently suggest, "I was a good customer for Matco and will be again at some time in the future. Work with me here, so I can say good things about your and Matco's customer service."

If he doesn't take it off your hands, say "I guess I'll have to take it up the line to the higher-ups. I talk to lots of mechanics and I'm on several big nationwide garage, tool and mechanic's fora. I have always said good things about Matco. If you help me, I'll sing Matco's praises far and wide."

1. Make a reasonable request about how much of a refund you expect.
2. Always give them positive reasons to do what's right
3. Save the hint of negatives as a last resort. Only after all good-faith efforts have failed, roll out bad publicity, BBB, negative feedback on web sites.

You can make this happen.

Offer to trade him for the $1500 in truck credit. I get guys all the time who think that since I'm a tool guy I'll write a check for every box they want to sell...It ain't so. My pockets don't run that deep. Another thing to concider. is he'd be paying you $1500 now, today. If he buys a box from Matco he'll get it on 8 week terms. That's a whole lot of difference.

Tool box's here are worse then car's, i would not even bother putting it up for half. maybe 800-900$ On a good day. I watch some of the craigslist south of the boarder here for good deals i hope over and get.
I have nothing agents Matco box's i like them, but they always sell for the least of any box.
The only way i would say to get it off your hands of the truck idea does not work out is to keep it and use it or make it a deal some one can not refuse.

hey Im sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with moving this. if you have an option to keep it untill times get better that may be what to do. you can also put it on ebay with a reasonable reserve and perhaps someone semi local will come get it. remember you and always lower the reserve if the bidding gets close.
you can also look at the other tool dealers and thell them that you will take $*** and you will hold it untill they have an interested party.
you can tell them that you will take $*** in truck credit or $***-$200 if its cash

a couple more options would be to move the box into the bedroom and make it a dresser. then next time sears puts the homeowner style bottom boxes on sale...night stands

I just bought the same setup on ebay for $1200, except in red. I wish i would have got it for less even, although i know its a good deal. I needed a new box for my home shop...
