still fs55r trimmer carburetor adjustment setting question

anyone have access to a service manual for a still fs55r string trimmer?

I disassembled the carb and put it into the parts cleaner. wondering if anyone can help me determine the setting of the low idle and mixture jet screw. (something like turn all the way in and back out 1 and a half turns) I am able to get the trimmer started and it runs on full throttle but keeps dying when getting to low speeds. I tried turning up the low mixture screw and adjusting the idle mixture, but that got frustrating trying to keep the idle just high enough with the throttle on the shaft to keep it from dying while still trying to adjust the carb screws at the end of the machine…

so I just walked away before I got even more pissed off. that's good for me, cause I've been know to throw things from time to time haha.


so back to original question, its a zama carb on a stihl fs55r 2 stroke gas trimmer. curious what the service manual says to adjust the carb to, to help save me a headache and possible having to try and find a screwdriver i throw as far as possible from the edge of the garage out into the yard…lol thanks

hi, sometimes, alot of times trying to get those carbs right is a losing battle. the carbs on those machines are cheap. and it will run right after replacing.

+1. Never had any luck with the homeowner grade stihl carbs. Toss the and buy a new carb.


Starting point is 1.5 turns out from seated with the limiters removed. Remember to reinstall the limiter caps or springs or the needles will move.

On my Honda GX series pressure washer motor, they tell you to snap off the old screw, with limiter cap, replace , adjust, and install new cap. I never made a serious effort to pull the cap off but I thought it might be safer to cut the tab on the cap, to get it out. Anybody worked on the Honda? I have no idle and wanted the screw out to clean the passage.I already cleaned the rest of the carb.

How old is unit and was it giving you trouble before you placed in the cleaner? If it's older just by a few years the carb should be replaced or rebuilt. There's a piece inside called a diaphragm which should be pliable and easy to move. This piece gets hard due to the ethanol in the gas and won't allow machine to run or idle correctly. 3/4 to 1-1/2 turns out usually the factory setting.

I know it doesn't help you now, but just some info for the future. When taking those screws out, I always bottom them out first, counting the turns it takes to do so. Then when reassembling, i always bottom them out and turn them back out however many turns I counted when I took it apart. This gets you back to where it was set initially.

By the time you get the manual, find parts you need replacing, get everything cleaned, new gasket, etc you could just spend the $20 for a new carb. Much easier.


After fiddling with my Honda 190 I am done with putzing around with small engine carbs. $24 delivered and problem fixed itself, vs the 2 hours I had already invested in disassembly, cleaning, assemble, only to find that the jets were still not getting the fuel in correctly. Time is money

what model honda gx engine do you have? i wouldn't start "snapping" off any screws.

Stihl may get their carbs from Zama, but they're carbs are customized to fit Stihl units, specifically so that you have to get a replacement from Stihl.

As for the number of turns, on every piece of Stihl equipment I've seen, it is marked on the housing somewhere. I'd look on the air filter cover.

But anyway, a service manual is not needed for this. This is covered in your owner's manual on page 32.

That is not necessarily true - the Zama carbs which I recently ordered fit my Stihl powerheads perfectly, with no modifications necessary.

also I couldn't find my owners manual but to the gent, rlitmen, who realized it was in there, thanks.

if after reading what they say is factory settings, and trying to adjust it with still no avail, I'm just gonna order a new carb. cheaper than a carb parts kit, and much quicker. Im with redmondjp and cf mtn on that one.

Dude I just went thru this with Shil 45 mine also wouldnt run right either after cleaning the carb numerous times.

So I got EVERYTHING in one kit from an Amazon vendor. A fully assembled carb, 2 new gaskets, xtra primer bulbs, fuel tubes, gas filters, spark plug and air filter and all for less than $20 delivered.

10 minutes after it arrived I was up and running.

Its not even worth fooling around anymore.

I have 15 BR600s & 15 FS110Rs that I maintain and I don't bother cleaning the carbs. I toss the old one in the trash and slap a new one on. I don't have the time to mess with them. But if these were mine personally, I would try to save a buck but since I don't pay for parts ....[emoji23]

What's everyone's experience on those accordion fuel hoses that come with some of these kits? I've been using stihl fuel line but if they come in the kits on amazon I guess it wouldn't hurt to try right?

time sure is money, and for 12.70 a new carb is the way to go. from my local shop just a carb kit is like 10 and tax. it's def a no brainer. thanks to everyone for their replies.. GJ is a great resource, made great by our collection of great members.

I have been working on small engines for a good amount of time. Since the internet came along I have ordered dozens of 2cycle rebuild gets for Zama , Walbro carbs and have rebuilt the same amount of them with no troubles. I also stock ones rebuilt and new that are common. Along with that filters and fuel line.
