In any case bits (especially philips and flathead) are the prime example of not a priority for most companies and literally the last thing one should be judged off of, every wiha product I’ve ever used was great (including the one or two I’ve broken, both flathead micro screwdrivers of course) and most others seem to have the same experience, they’re also exceptionally transparent about COO so they weren’t exactly fooling people into thinking everything was german made

also have you used other brands the same way and not had any break?

You know, it's funny... I mangled a micro flat screwdriver bit, too. I was using it as a tiny pry bar. I must have been suffering temporary insanity.

Do you find it fishy that Silicon Valley is based around Palo Alto, California and Stanford University?
Or just happenstance. Shockley moved to Palo Alto because his mother lived there and the 'Traitorous Eight' only had one Stanford grad I think.

No doubt having good schools helped, although it wouldn't surprise me if the tech companies were a natural segue from the local defense plants.

Oh yeah. Wiha. I've got some of their Swiss pliers, the heavy duty screwdrivers, and one of those bit boxes with all the unusual (to me at least) varieties. They're fine.

One of mine was from that too 🤣 was something small and that was the only thing that would fit besides a razor blade

The town the two companies are in is very small, so yes it is a huge coincidence they are so close together. I'm going with the theory of either an employee started one or they had a relationship years ago.

At one time Minnesota had a vibrant entrepreneur community, Medtronic (catheters) started decades ago and a bunch of employees split off and started their own similar companies, the same thing happened with electronics, we had CRAY and Honeywell Computers with a million offshoot similar companies so it's in the genes up here.

Okay, but like, can we go back to the part where you’re evidently building a product in 2022 using slotted drive???
Ever seen a terminal block?

This has to be put in perspective, bits are a consumable item. You cannot buy one, use it in a driver and expect it to last forever.

I've been using the same pb swiss bits for 2 years now building 3D Printers. I did a rough calculation (units built x number of fasteners per unit) and these bits have anywhere from 30k to 40k cycles. Have not thrown one put yet

So you're saying that a driver that has six points of contact lasts longer than one with two.
Yes?... you just liked a comment about the scarce use of slotted fasteners. So why would I have well used slotted bits?

If you were tearing up hex bits, then there really would be a problem.

Does the the plastic block flex and compress when the slotted screws are being tightened?

I went back and looked at the pic again.

They all look like they shattered except one that looks like it was turned on a lathe.

I am not a metallurgist, but it looks like they did not temper the bits after hardening. Tempering get rid of brittleness.

The WIHA Factory did not have control of their process or workflow. The OP is right they did poop the bed.

He’s saying that you’re comparing your pb swiss hex bits to wiha slotted bits which is the same impression I got, slotted bits are WAY more prone to breakage by default so that would be a silly way to compare brands, almost any hex bit will last far far longer than even the best slotted

somebody posted this from an amazon review in one of the other pb swiss threads

Yes, they will do that, and quite quickly IF you use them with an impact driver.

PB offer different bits for hand and impact use. I’ve used the hand bits for years and my experiences are similar to Jicle above. Used by hand, at appropriate torque levels, the hand bits seem to be everlasting.

Woah woah woah hold the phone

you snapped off the bits…. On terminal blocks???

I keep saying it, but I am not the one building these. I do know they are being used with a small ryobi electric driver, and nothing else is being built in the area.
