Amazing what people will put outside where anyone can grab it. There's a place here that has an M1914 Hotchkiss MACHINE GUN on it's tripod sitting out front as part of the store display. It's covered in so much paint that I guess no one except, me, realizes that it's 100% real. To the untrained eye it just looks like something bodged together from scrap auto parts. But someday it's gonna get them into HUGE trouble.

That's to bad some one would do that. Hopefully it didn't just get scrapped.

Does the average person these days even know what an anvil is without referencing wiley coyote?

"these days"? Has there ever been a period when an average person knows about anvils? Blacksmithing has always been a specialized task.

If they get it back, they need to drop it on the thief's head. Some people just need to go away ...

There are a lot of anvils on the Cedar Rapids Iowa craigslist right now. Have the local PD check that out.

Wow. Probably has the fire control group removed. At least I hope.

This thread reminded me I snapped a couple of pictures of the anvil on display at the museum at Mount Rushmore.

And I'll throw in a pic of the Rock Island that sits next to it.

I'm sure some scrappers stole it. Wonder if they realized they can't scrap it.

For what reason could you not scrap an
Anvil ?
I mean, i'm not a scrapper but i do about
Once or twice a year haul a load of scrap
To be recycled. They have your drivers
License on file but they don't photograph
every item you throw out.

As far as I can tell, it's 100% complete. Just slathered in so much paint and what looks like roofing tar that it would take an ENORMOUS amount of work to get it running, IF you could find a belt and some 6.5mm Lebel ammo (I think that's what it shoots. I can't remember) But the receiver is 100% unregistered. It's a trophy some guy brought back from WW1 amazingly enough.

-I'd bet a month's paycheck the receiver is at least 25% filler. :D

It's almost certainly a "DEWAT", a deactivated war trophy. Typically deactivated by torching slots out of the receiver and breech.

It wasn't uncommon for museums and the like to buy these, cosmetically cover up the damage, and put them on display.

The chances it's intact range around the same chances the Globetrotters have of winning the Superbowl. :D

Well DUH!

Anvils are going for $500-$600 around there, and this one was just sitting there.

Wonder what the name and weight was.

I'm looking for at least a #200 Fisher.
