Stolen door opener - reprogramming question.

Hi all,

My folks called me today to tell me that their car had been gone through last night. It has a door that doesn't lock all the time. Anyway, the only thing missing was the door opener for their 2 car garage. It's a chamberlain 1/2 hp. Part number 41a5021-1m-315.

So I've unplugged the opener for now, but I'm wondering about reprogramming it. I have the instructions on how to do it, but will this let the missing opener work as well. The reason I ask is I tried the door that I still have two openers for and both worked after I hit the purple reset button.

I'm sure someone has run into this issue before.

Thanks.

Murdock

You should be able to reprogram the remaining remotes several times. The opener can only store so many then it will kick it out.

Hi Cobra,

Thanks for the reply. So should I reprogram the opener several times to eliminate the possibility of the missing opener still working? They go away a fair bit and their garage would be easy pickings with the door opener.

Murd,
What you need to do is just reprogram one of your remaining remotes and the see if the one you did not program still works. If it does, then something is not working right . By the way, I am not familiar with that particular opener, but usually a "reset" button is not the same thing as reprogramming it.

Just one more thing. Any time I go away for any length of time, my garage door gets locked. Yes you have to get out of the car and unlock it when you get back but so what ? Just a little more piece of mind.

If you hold the program button Dow for about 30 seconds that should wipe out all remotes and make you reprogram them. I had a Linear system and when you would hold the program button down for a length of time the light would do a rapid flash and blink I think 3 times and it would wipe out all programmed remotes. Try that out

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I tested the other doors opener after the reset and realized both controllers were still active, and that the missing one probably was too. I'll do some more poking around on the company site.

My folks go away overnight almost every weekend, and while I'm only a couple of blocks away someone could be there and gone pretty quick.

If the opener was made after about 1997, it should have "rolling codes" type security.
As stated above, follow the instructions to re-train an opener, and then see if any other opener can still open the door. It should require that they all be re-trained.

I just went through this last night. Brought home new Subaru with HomeLink option, followed instructions to set up the Subaru Homelink. Subaru Homelink worked fine.
Tried to get the Nissan out to go to work today, and the previously trained Homelink in that car failed to operate the door. Got the hand-held remote out of the kitchen drawer and tried it. No go. Had to use the wall switch to get Nissan out and go to work.
This evening I retrained the Nissan Homelink and the hand held, and they all open the door now.

Check if insurance card or plate info is missing too. They may have that and folks address too.

Hold the button for 30 seconds. Then try one of the remotes. It shouldn't work. Then program. Did this when we bought a new house

Heading up there for lunch (and to play with the jukebox) shouldn't have a problem with those instructions Cobra found.

Also BD, the car was in the driveway so they should know where the garage is. I was actually surprised they didn't try it right away. I have a stack of quarters for the jukebox sitting on the bench that they didn't touch.

Thanks all for the replies and help.

No the first instructions I found didn't mention the reset to remove other openers. It just had how to add controllers. I used the 30 second method, worked fine.

Hello Murd,

At least some of the Chamberlain 1/2 hp. garage door openers number 41A5021-1M-315 have programming instructions that are wrong and won't work . I am refering to the instructions that are clearly silk screened next to the "Learn Button" on the back of the unit.

FYI, the instructions I've seen wrong are next to a PURPLE Learn Button. That may not mean anything since the color of the button actually has to do with different years that the unit was manufactured. So don't worry about the color of the button.

The Learn Button is NOT labeled as the Learn Button but it is the only button on the back of the unit and the LED is inside and is visible when lighted thru a hole in the back plate next to the Learn Button.

To solve your theft of remote problem, you should:

1. PRESS and HOLD the Learn Button. The LED next to the Learn Button will light. After about 6 seconds, the LED will go dark and after it does, you can RELEASE the Learn Button. You have just ereased all REMOTES that the unit will accept commands. Test this by pressing the control button on any remote that you believe should work and now do not work. If so, you can assume that the stolen remote is also inoperative. If you have any remote still working, you should assume the stolen remote is still working and you should repeat this step.

2. PRESS and RELEASE the Learn Button. The LED next to the Learn Button will light. You now have about 20 to 30 seconds to press thee control button on any remote that you want to activate your door opener. If you are successful in programming, the LED will flash, otherwise the LED will remain lit meaning you did not program the opener. After the LED goes dark, you can test your remote and see if it now operating the unit. If not, repeat this step. You may repeat this step with each remote you want to be able to use. The stolen remote will not be reactivated.

I hope this helps.

If they are out of town that often I would put the door outlet on a switch so you can turn it off when away.

X2. My opener never had a remote, its a really old Ambass-a-dor. I came home from work one day and the door is wide open. I go in the house and ask my wife if she had opened the door for some reason, and she had no idea it was open. Nothing missing, but its been on an on/off switch ever since. Only safe way for sure.

Here's another thought. Instead of using a pushbutton remote in that car that doesn't lock, get one of the "remotes" that is meant to mount on the wall that requires a combination.

I've said this before, but I am convinced that garage door remotes are the highest form of magic. Have a number of doors, in several locations, and in order to control them all, I have a fleet of remotes in my car. ...so many they won't all fit on one visor.

Pure voodoo!!!!

This. I had to do this at my last house as the builder programmed the neighbors remote to also open my door. It didn't happen often, but occasionally they would open my door, but not close it. It took a few months for me to figure out what was causing it, then it was an easy fix following the above, then adding back my remotes.

buy the chamberlain myQ garage toy ( http://www.chamberlain.com/smartphone-control-products/myq-garage/model-myq-g0201 ) and set up your cell phone to get the notices. That way when they go out of town, you will know when someone opens the door.

Then also make sure that you have the local police dept. phone number in your phone, because when you are in Europe and your garage door opens in California, 911 does not work from Europe. But you can close the door all the way from Europe :)

Its about $100 at most places and as a bonus it also allowed me to get rid of my remotes as I now use my phone which I always have with me, to open/close the door.
