Stone chips on paint-what's your best techniques?

I've so far repaired stone chips on paint in pretty basic way: clean with thinner, then paint with a brush, either small artists brush or makers nail paint like touch up brush. Results not very good, usually rust in a year or two. So, how shoul it best be made? All your hints and tips welcome.

Depending on the size of the chip. Small pin head size chips get cleaned and touched up as you described with the added work of multiple layers to build up the paint so it can be cut with 400-600 grit paper and then polished. Larger chips get feathered primed and airbrushed building up to a point that can be cut and buffed.
