Can anyone with a MaxJax recommend a comfortable stool that is the right height?

for my four post, if i feel like sitting down under it, i've got an old office chair that works pretty good... swivels and reclines.

I'm in the exact same boat on finding a good seat for a Maxjax that I'm planning on purchasing soon. I'm 6'1" and sitting on a standard mechanics stool doesn't seem low enough. I saw this Craftsman adjustable creeper that seems to be perfect for a Maxjax:

That looks pretty good. It appears that this is a rebranded Whiteside 2up creeper, and ToolTopia.com has it for $116.99 w/free shipping.

Any other suggestions from MaxJax owners?

I use this cheapie from Northern Tool:

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_375713_375713

I'm 5'10" and it works great on the lowest setting... just the right height to comfortably sit under a car raised to to the full height on the MaxJax. Plus, it's only $30!

I also bought a couple of mid-height jack stands from Greg Smith that I stick under the arms of my MaxJax for a little extra insurance:

http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/2-Ton-Low-Tripod-Stand-p/ht52008.htm

MaxJax is a great product but a couple of stands make me feel a whole lot safer!

The stands need to be assembled... Make sure you put them together loosely before tightening everything down or you won't be able to get the last bits on. Definitely requires a little patience.

I ordered the short jack stands recommeded by texmin yesterday at about 11:00am and they were delivered at about 11:00am today!

That's really great service from gregsmithequipmentsales.com.

Go the junkyard and get yourself a cool reclining car seat. (Not a baby car seat mind you.)

Get a set of casters or a furniture dolly.

Add casters or a furniture dolly to underside of cool reclining car seat.

voilà!

Is the one I use. I think i got it on sale for $15cdn.

I think it lists it's seat height at 14", but that includes the foam. When my **** goes on it, the foam compresses, and u lose about an inch.

Works fine when I can get the 3" height adaptors on the arms... I have thought about shortening it, but not confident in my beginner welding abilities.

Harbor Freight has the lowest height stool I have found so far. Should work well until I make my own.

If you do go to the junkyard and get a seat as JSK suggests, don't get it in that colour!
It will be covered in grease and crud in a very short time so a cheap grey velour recliner is fine.
I have a 4 poster and use a recliner on wheels and it works brilliantly. In fact last summer I actually fell asleep under the car while doing some boring chassis prep.

Oh, and don't forget you'll tip onto your head if you don't extend the runners back at least a foot before attaching castors.

FYI Creeper seats.

I have one of those HF type creeper seats and it has shucked it's bearings with not much use. The bearings were smaller than BB's.

I just bought a Tail Bone. Same height as the cheaper creeper chair, but massive bearings and wheels. More comfortable except for the "rack your balls" hump in the seat. I'm lookin' for a mod I can do for that.

So, look over the bearings on the casters and the quality of the casters.

Regguy, Jose, how high off the floor is the seat you are using? How tall are you, Regguy?

None of the rolling, pneumatic garage stools I have work with the MaxJax, as they are too tall, even in the lowest position. I thought of modifying one of them, but the pneumatic cylinder limits how far one can go.

I am attracted to the creeper shown above, but this may work only with the lift in the lower lift position. It might be too low if the lift were in the higher position. What do you think?

The Racatac stool shown below, which is unusual in concept, in theory is ideal for the lift in the topmost position, but I do not know whether in fact it will be comfortable and practical or will actually work. here is a description:

As far as more conventional seats go, the ProGear Racing Rolling Stool looks good and might be low enough at 12”. It has the advantage of being adjustable for height. Notice how they solved the pneumatic cylinder problem. Here is the link:

Has anyone tried these? I would be interested in your comments.

Many thanks, and regards,

Andy

Interested in keeping this thread going. I'm currently using a homemade stool made from unistrut attached to a canibalized HF dolly with a plywood seat with dense foam padding. I even put a baking pan under for tools/parts. I don't have the seat height measurement handy but it works really well although it's too high currently.

I don't have a good unistrut cutting solution right now in order to lower the seat but I feel a portabandsaw purchase in my near future. I really like the idea of mounting a reclining car seat on a dolly. Especially if it could be made to adjust height wise when needed.

Maybe an electric hospital bed would be good for taking it easy under the car while checking it out!
Skip the recliner!

I have one that appears to be identical to the Sears one, but don't remember where I ordered it from. It was quite a bit cheaper. You might be able to find it by searching online. My little rolling stool was too high, as you mentioned. This one also let me rest my back.

The pattern I'm noticing is that folks in the mid-five foot height range can use the adjustable stools that are widely available. For those of us in the upper five to lower six foot range, it's less of an option. You're probably screwed if you're 6'6" and have a MJ!

The Progear stool is supposed to go down to 12", but it doesn't quite go down that low. It just works with the MaxJax, but for a car with a flat bottom, I wish it went a bit lower.

It's a good looking stool though, and it does go up to a good height and so is versatile.

I'm about 5'10" or so and I recently modified my home-made unistrut rolling seat to a height 8" off the ground. This allows me to scoot around without hitting my head. Eight inches makes for a stool that is difficult to get off of, however, this is the tradeoff with having a MJ.

I suggest that anyone looking to buy or make a stool solution for their MJ simply have someone measure you (sitting on the floor) from floor to top of head. Measure your vehicle height from floor to underside at lowest area and do the math. I think you'll be surprised at the result.

Yes! 6 ft people have about 6 inches of seating height to play with!

I like my Hazet with my Bendpak MD-6XP mid rise scissor lift. I'll admit, i like it partly because it says Hazet on it.

Don't have a maxjax, but I actually lowered my old Autolifters drive-on to the lowest setting, just because it is the best hight for my standard creeper...I do have the same problem with My Snappy mid rise...

I gotta question...

Why are your barstools mounted from the ceiling?

I mounted 1'x1' pine boards to the bases, then mounted some hurricane panel channels to a another piece of wood to the cieling...It really keeps them out of my way...I'll have to get you some better pics..
