Hey Guys,
I am relatively new to the forum, just been lurking a bit and doing some research. I just bought my first house and decided to post up my plans for the large shop on my property.

The Building

This is a 40' x 80' pole barn style building. The building has a 20' x 30' insulated workshop sectioned off. The previous owners also had a separate insulated storage space roughly 10' x 20'.

Currently the non-insulated part is used as storage. Maybe one day I will pour a floor in there and have a killer shop haha

The Plan
Take the workshop shop and turn it into a clean modern work space for my car projects. I will be leaving the current layout of the barn the same.

Here are a couple pictures of how the space looked last week:

I asked the previous owner to leave the tools he didn't want behind so it's still a bit messy!

This past weekend I started taking the old shelves off the wall on the left and removing his old wood working benches at the back. I haven't quite decided if I will be keeping the current work bench that runs the length of the shop under the windows on the right. I may need to redo the tops and fix the drawers.
My work basically stopped there as I had to put it on hold to do a brake job on my moms incredibly rusty Sebring haha.

This weekend I will be raising a section of the workshop roof to fit a full auto lift in.
I am going with this lift http://www.directlift.ca/dl9.htm . I needed a top bracing lift due to clearance issues with my personal car and some friends cars on bottom bracing lifts. Unfortunately my ceiling was at 11'-9". So a small section will be dismantled and rebuilt to fit the 12' high lift.

Anyways hope you guys enjoyed the first post and let me know if you have an ideas or tips for me. Even suggestions on wall finishes or floor toppings would help!

Timbo

First off....Welcome to Garage Journal. If you would be so kind to, could you put your state in your profile. It does help to answer questions from time to time. No need for a city, just a state. Thank you.

Secondly....nice space to convert into your dream shop. Make sure you post up a lot of pics as we really like pics. As far as tips and ideas...you've come to the right place because we love to spend others money.

Welcome.
First house eh! Nice set-up.
i would keep the long workbench under the window. Looks solid and a great spot with the window there.

Hey Guys! Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends south of the border!
Not a lot of progress lately. I have been pretty busy with other stuff. Just chipping away at it on the weekends. Here is a brief summary of the past month:

Roof framing

16%20-%20vaK42bX_zpsjd0zblge.jpg

Finally have the extra couple inches for the lift

OSB installed and work bench removal

It looks so much bigger with the benches out. I am sure that will change once the lifts in haha.

I went out and purchased a big *** compressor.

I tried to get the propane heater going but its not working. However its 27 years old so it might be time to switch to a smaller more efficient unit. This weekend I plan on removing it.
I wiped down the walls and hopefully this week I can start to paint. I have also been considering an epoxy for the floor.

I plan on getting more done this month than last. I had a couple other things on the go. Had to finish the porch in time for the snow! Just made it!

Another purchase I thought I would share is this little guy

This thing is great. Just a deep cycle battery and 2hp motor. Helped tons with the last couple trailers to go in the storage buildings.

So it's been a while since I last posted. I apologize in advance for the lengthy post.
I haven't progressed quite as far as I had hoped I would have by now. However I felt I should share what's been done this past year as this next week or two some big changes are coming. Seeing the in-between stage is what this forum is all about!

So basically my shop sat the way it was in the previous post for almost a year.
One of the first things I did was spray the whole place white. I don't really have any pictures of this process because it basically no time at all.
I also replaced all the man doors in the building with new steel ones. Added a door at the back of the shop to the small storage area.
Through out the old gigantic propane heater too.
It took me forever to decide on a floor finish. Originally the plan was epoxy. So we ground and cleaned the floor:

However I changed my mind. I was worried about durability. So I contacted SwissTrax when they had a killer sale on and placed my order.
The problem I was facing was that my floor was incredibly uneven in some areas and chipped badly around some edges. I decided to level it out using some self leveler. It actually ended up turning out far better than I thought it would:

After that I was ready to install the SwissTrax. I decided to go with a the grey tile and black border. It went together like a dream. Super easy install. The boarder took time because wanted it to be as even as possible so every piece had to be cut. I plan on getting some good pictures tonight. I moved my car last weekend and this first time it's been empty since the floor went down. I currently only have this:

I also put some new lighting, speakers and a propane heater. I got the lighting from homedepot. Unfortunately it isn't on their website so I cant post a link but I will post a picture of the box if people are interested. They are super bright, I probably could have used less.
The speakers were Klipsch R1650C (seen Here). I bought them during the Black Friday clearance sale so they only cost me $45 each! I am not sure I could recommend paying full pop for these but if you get them on sale they are definitely worth it.
I can't remember the exact model the heater was. I will have to dig up that information for those interested. It pretty compact and heats up the space fairly quickly. So far I am loving it.

This weekend I am putting some tongue and groove pine up on the walls. Plan on doing some faux beams that will be boxing in the raised roof. I will try to update more regularly now that things are moving along!

So the wood arrived before I could get some clean pictures of the floor.
This is best i could do right now!

The wood went up the back wall this weekend. This pine was on the cheaper side. So I have a lot of pieces with grey through them.

the grey running through it I decided to forgo the usual method of trying to get as few joints as possible and instead installed it more like how you would barn board. I feel like I made the right choice and it came out looking pretty decent.

You can also see a pile of that rough sawn pine (in the first picture) for the faux beams. We laid those out late Sunday but didn't quite get to building them yet. That will be something for next weekend!

Last weekends work! Doesn't look like much but we are still learning and the process has been slow. Could have gone the easy route and done a couple things differently that would have taken significantly less time. For example there in the two pictures below you might be able to see just how out of level the two low ceilings are. That's the original shop roof done by the old farmer. If we just followed the old roof line it would have been fairly simple.
This section of the original roof is actually the best. Only out 2 to 3" over 20'

This is the face of the other beam (front of the shop). I will take some better pictures this weekend.

One more with both.
IMG_1273_zpsk7rquidn.jpg

I don't have the wood to completely finish the beams this weekend. We will probably start on the pine tongue and groove that goes between the beams on the walls. If I have enough room after the lift goes in I will probably do the ceiling between the beams too.

I was thinking of going with a 7/8" corrugated metal panel for the other walls. Probably something like this: http://www.westmansteel.ca/products/cladding/7-8-corrugated-27/
I think I would have it finished from the manufacturer in the charcoal colour. My only concern is it may make the shop too dark. However I ordered some samples and the charcoal colour was actually lighter than expected, I would put it between Charcoal and Regent Grey on their website colour chart.
I'm still kicking myself for painting the shop white. That chip board ended up looking pretty ugly and whole idea of the shop has changed into something a lot more refined than originally planned hahaha
