Tonight as I welded on my ancient crusty hand-me-down metal kitchen cabinets (from the ?? era) . . . I thought of those of you rolling new cabinets in to pristine shops. Someone has to share what they do for a living . . . I'm a programmer here in KC. *Sigh*

Speaking of that welding experience . . . it was on the bottom shelf, nearest the floor and I couldn't move the cabinet out. I ended up taking some scrap angle iron and it fit into the lip of the steel shelf almost perfectly. (The shelf had been bent down and stress cracked. I did a little dolly work to straighten everything out.) The only problem with welding in this case was it was too close to the floor to look under it. I found a car mirror in a box of old **** (from a project car I sold) and used that to look under the shelf and weld it up. It was kind of weird to do, and it's not very pretty, but it's probably the strongest shelf in the cabinet now. :)

For future jobs, wouldn't it be easier to drill holes in the shelf and do plug welds from the top? just a thought.

Programmer here in in the western burbs of Philly. And don't worry, my workbench is homemade for about $40 in 2x4's and plywood. My cabinets were just 'retrieved' from a kitchen remodel.

There's more to a productive shop/garage then looking pretty...

In Kansas City (Live on MO side.. work on KS side go figure). I think a smallish welding setup is in my near future. I just picked up a little project that might require some. Or at least in mind mind will require some so I can justify buying yet another tool for my garage! haha.

See -- that's why I love the Internet . . . great ideas that don't come to you at like 11:00 PM when your sitting there going :headscrat . :lol_hitti

Thanks -- will try that one next time. These cabinets are pretty ancient and I wasn't looking to spend a lot of time on them . . . someday I'll sand them and paint them . . . just not anytime soon. At least I moved the go-kart that was sitting in front of them so I can at least use the cabinets. Cleaning out the junk (and selling it) to finance more projects.
