Where should I look for cabinets or storage shelves that don't break the bank but still look nice.

Old metal kitchen cabinets on CL . . . . they are hard to find, but anything from 50's or 60's are classic winners that look awesome when repainted to match your garage theme.

Found the GJ thread where Alabama guy find whole slew of 50's metal cabinets around X-mas and he scored them all for around $200 IIRC.

Another type of awesome storage/cabinets are the glass front hanging cabinets often from military or at aerospace companies. Often these pop up on Gov liquidation auctions. They are metal and very well made.

Used office lateral file cabinets are tough to beat for price/looks -if you can use roomy drawers for lots of stuff. Several threads regarding file cabinets here.

Thanks. They are all shipped in flat boxes and easy to assemble. The 72" with all the drawers is a long assembly, but not hard. I'm very happy with their look and quality so far.

look for used office supplies and habitat for humanity restore locations.

You didn't say if you were going for a particular look or style. Check craigslist periodically for used kitchen cabinets. I scored more cabinets than I have room for, for about $300, from a couple remodeling their kitchen. This is a little more than 1/2 of what I got:

Break the bank is costing way too much money and more than I have.

An the inexpensive side you can get metal wall hanging cabinets from HF. They do good for the cost.

Metal cabinets from Sears, Lowe's or Home Depot stores seem to be better constructed and easy install systems. I found a mixed set of Gladiator Cabinets at our local Lowe's. I like the install and the strength they have provided so far. Good Luck

This is why people need to put their location in their profile. I just posted up an ad yesterday from CL that had a bunch of nice uppers for $15 each, and he had some bottoms to go with them.

+1 on used office supplies. I have two cabinets and two filing cabinets for storage. Not always ideal as you can't have a work surface on top like a kitchen cabinet but they work for me.

I'd put them at medium duty. I've loaded them up pretty good with no issues.

They make pretty good bases. 3 drawer cabinets were a bit too tall for me.

Ditto on the used office cabinets. I used several for my garage and workbench storage. Look for the office cabinets that have doors and roll-out/pull-out drawers; those work great for storing heavy items like power tools.

I used some cabinets from Ikea. I blew up some old Hot Rod magazine covers for a more "garage" look. They seem to be as sturdy as some of the sheet metal ones I have seen.
