Storage in Toolbox Lid Question

I saw someone post a picture of a tray with tool clip mounted inside the lid of a craftsman three draw toolbox (or similar toolbox) on this site, any idea how they did this. I think they said they took the idea from the guys who worked in kart racing.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have no clue what you are talking about.

Can you make a rough sketch (heck, draw it with a Crayon on a napkin and take a pic of it) so we can get an idea of what you are looking for?

You might be talking about a older Snap-on box. It has a mounting system under the lid and uses clips to hold ratchets and extensions.

just some form of board, some use mdf, some use sheet perspex or similar (use what you like) bolted or glued to the lid

then spring clips screwed to it, someone will post a link.

i guess it basically a mini peg board kinda idea.

So is it better to bolt it in through the lid or glue the board on? I was thinking of using a thin sheet aluminum or steel so i guess bolts or rivets will be best.

any suggestions?

Not to get too off subject, but I have never understood the reason for the flip up tops on a rollaround type of tool box. I would prefer to have another drawer right at the top of the box. That way you can sit a radio or whatever you want on top of the box and not have to worry about moving it to get at whatever you have under the flip up lid.

I hear that, it is really hard to find a top box without a flip up top and the center boxes never have enough drawers.

And here I was thinking that the flip up lid on top boxes, rather than another drawer, is a pain in the hinder. Guess I'm not the only one.

I suspect some of the thinking behind no drawer on the top is to try to maintain I center of gravity even if too many heavy drawers get opened at once.

I keep the heavy sockets in the fixed area under lid part. If that slid out along with a couple other heavy loads...over the big Snap On would go. Thats a pile o weight heading your way.

Primary reason for flip tops with the recess is so you can store 3/4 drive deep sockets vertically and still access them easily.

Personally, I like the top compartment in my boxes. I keep very heavy stuff like sockets in there, that would cause an issues in the drawers. Plus the depth is nice to stand deep sockets on edge. Then again my boxes are cheaper friction slides so the newer boxes with ball bearings and deep drawers may not have an issue with the extra weight and depth.
