Hello new here but long time lurker. I have a 24'x28' block garage I have been using for 12 years now. I am looking for creative storage ideas and good usage of wall space. I love my garage but I always feel that it could be a lot better organized, I dont have space or money for expensive multi drawer box systems. Pics or suggestions would be great. Dave

I've been quite successful finding storage at auction. I picked up a pretty nice Husky 13 drawer roller chest for $130, a Snap-On top box for $20 and several other nice older boxes along with some cabinets and tables all for a few dollars each. (Unfortunately, or fortunately, I've also picked up lots of tools to fill them all with, so now I'm looking for more storage :)

If you stay away from the Snap-On stuff, the "lesser" brands usually sell for for a fraction of what you'd pay for new, and usually much less than you'd see them for on Craigslist.

If you find some other bargains along the way, you can flip those and make a few bucks to offset what you paid.

Are you familiar with the TV show "Hoarders"? Well, my mom could be featured on that show. Having been brought up in a house like that, and knowing I have the same DNA, it's a constant battle for me to keep the house organized. So I have gone the other extreme and become a "pitcher". It's SO nice to through stuff away! That leaves me with less things to keep organized. So my suggestion would be to go through and part with the stuff you do not really need. You can sell stuff, or haul it to the dump.

Once you have determined what you want to keep, then you can decide how best to organize your things. Mix & match cabinets (per spongerich's post) are great because you can paint them to match/complement the colors in your garage. I prefer cabinets over open shelving because IMO shelves look cluttered (even with totes). But go with what works for you.

You can build cabinets or -- with a little patience -- pick them up second-hand. What I slowly figured out was that once you've eaten up a piece of your garage's floorspace with a cabinet, there's no reason not to use the space above it all the way to the ceiling. For me, this meant more cabinets above my cabinets -- and cabinets above my benches, too. You can have the higher stuff come farther out from the wall than the lower stuff.

I personally don't like stuff sitting out in the open -- it collects dust on everything you're storing and still looks cluttered even when everything's put away. So I slowly replaced all of my open shelving with cabinets. Sometimes this was as simple as putting a box around a set of wall shelves to turn them into cabinets.

If space is tight (and when isn't it?), use the space above where your garage doors stow. I also put cabinets along the wall where I park my car, with the low edge just above human height so that I still have room to get out of the car.

Cabinets with doors made out of peg board may be all you need.

Thanks regguy that actually was a solution I had thought of doing but seeing how you did it makes me think that would help. My issue is The height of my walls that area above like that is like wasted space so framing out the length like that would be a good idea. Thanks again and keep the ideas coming. It all helps.
