Storage over garage door

Finally have a garage with some height and I need to use it. From the spring/track to the ceiling is 5 ft. It's a 16' door, so I have a little over 7' of space on each side between those boards

I'm thinking lighter stuff, like decorations and possibly some infrequently used supplies/tools.

A lift won't be happening soon, if ever, so I'm not worried about getting in the way moving the garage door.

I've seen the 2'x4' shelves that tie back to the ceiling or wall with wire, but was wondering what you guys have used.

Before you get started dump that opener and put in a jack shaft opener. It frees up the section in the center of the door.

I built 4x8 frames out of 1.5” tubing, and used flat bar down from the trusses.

Lol. Nope. It was installed a month ago (by the previous owners) for over $500. It is extremely quiet, works perfectly and is most certainly no where on the radar in the list of **** I am working on in this house. Sure, if I had a 25 year old chain drive, I'd upgrade, but not a brand new belt drive and not when I don't need more height in the center

I haven’t seen a belt drive unit. I swapped my chain drive about a decade ago. You also have a lot more real estate above your door than I do, so I don’t suppose it will make that much difference to you.

I built this over the wife’s garage giving me just under six feet of head room and I could park a car on it if need be.

I made one at our old place that hung down from rope. I put light bulky stuff up there like empty water cans, fishing rods, empty coolers etc.

There is a beam across the garage. I put a ledger into the header. Supports are on 12" centers.
It is plenty strong but if I have heavy stuff I put out along the edge. There's just enough space to fit standard plastic containers.20210714_202753[1].jpg

I know people who store ladders above the garage doors. They use bike hooks. Yes, it takes a step ladder to stand on to reach the stored ladder, but they don't use the really long (reaches the second story) extension ladders all that often.

Also, they have only a small space above the garage door, like 12in or 18in.

I had my ladder on the ceiling of the garage in my last house, but at this one, I think it will go in the crawlspace or the backside of the shed. Besides this space for shelving, my canoes are going to be hung from the ceiling to keep them out of harm's way

I built a hanging shelf above my garage bay. Basically the size of a sheet of plywood. Lagbolts into studs and carriage bolts on the hanging supports. Had to frame out the vent pipe from over my kitchen stove. Oh yeah, the SK wipes were Steals and Deals...
