Storage Shed Build

Sorry I don't have pics right now. I was too busy trying to get stuff done and it wasn't in my thoughts at the time.

Shed is going to be 16x18. For HHG storage plus the yard tractor, bike, garden junk, etc. It will also have my air compressor.

Since my yard isn't done yet I needed to get in the trench for juice and air before next week when they are supposed to seed it.

Today I rented a trencher and good god. If you want a piece of equipment that will smash your balls multiple times and generally beat you up... get one!

20-30 feet from the house was all rock. I pulled a few out that were 10-12" around. Everytime that I hit a big rock the machine would buck like a pissed off bull in whatever direction it felt like.

After 4hrs of trenching I have about 75% of it done. Tomorrow I hope to finish, run my stuff and bury it, but we'll see.

Welcome, some time back I built a 8x8 for mower and yard stuff. A miniature New Yankee Workshop. Yours sounds much better.

Only thing as bad as a trencher is a sod cutter. Be careful, those things have a
mind of their own.

As far as the trenching, sounds like your glass is 3/4 full.

Yeah thinking about it now I think a mini excavator would have worked much better.

I haven't used one so I figured the trencher would be quicker. Also the mini x was $80 more.

Got most of the trench filled in today. I have to finish up tomorrow, move all the topsoil back and then work on the yard with a chain link fence drag and then a roller. Need to haul in a load or two of topsoil to clean up a couple spots too.

really would need to take a week or two of leave so I can get stuff done instead of fawking around with work. Might do that... I have 60 days saved up anyhow.

Well the trench is filled and the topsoil hauled back. I hand shoveled about 20 yards of dirt yesterday and I have another ~10 to do today.

Also cut all my septic tank pipes and put them in sprinkler zone valve boxes at ground level. Not sure why but 99% of the houses around here have the "poop pipe farm" in their yards.

Worked from around 10AM until midnight, and of course it's about the hottest day in recorded history. Seriously we almost broke records. Was 84* here at the house.

Sorry no pics. Been busy as hell and I have no idea where my camera is. I started working on the yard/shed last week and I've put in about 120hrs into it at this point to get the yard ready for seed.

Hauled in about 15 yards of dirt, need to haul in another load or two. Yard ought to be the nicest in the neighbor as most were just seed thrown down on 1/2 prepped soil.

I finished my shed last month and its a great addition that really helps make the garage a more usable space.

Well right no it's nothing other than the conduit for electric. The thing is several projects ran into each other. I had to trench before I did final grade on the yard and seed. I will finish the yard tomorrow. Just have to haul a load or two of topsoil to fill a low spot.
Already have been told the yard looks awesome and I don't even have grass haha! Someone asked if I was making a golf course even.


I need to finish my garage floor and drywall in teh house. Tthen put a water softener in, and window blinds before I can start on the shed. Oh... window shutters too. All of that is stacked in teh living room right now. Can't hardly sit on the couch haha.

I'd like to get it done this year, but I will be gone most of August and still have to pave the drive and do the yard... course along with other small projects.

At some point I hope I can do some work on my cars. I have 6 and each needs some work. Need to finish on an engine swap on one, pull an engine on another....

If it's like my old Nokia candy-bar phone, you set up an entry for yourself (ie: your home phone) in the address book. Add your email address. Then, use that contact (email address) as the destination for a new message, attaching the pic. Might have to do one at a time (like mine) but at least it get's them to your account.

Going to start building fairly soon, prolly in a month or so.

Wondering for a base, 4x6s 2 on each end and one in the middle (on the 16 foot end)... 2x6 or 2x8 frame? Will use 3/4" plywood to sheath (all pressure treated)

I hauled in about 20 yards of gravel to build the pad for it. I didn't realize the yard was that unlevel, but at the low end I had to put close to 2ft of gravel. Thought about putting a retaining wall, but I'm not going to bother. Part of the pile was there since last fall and nothing washed off. Worse case I can do it after the fact.

I would have liked to just do a slab, but to be called a "shed" it has to be movable, so can't be on a slab.

Need to plate compact it tomorrow and maybe haul in another truck load.
Pad is 18x22, shed will be 16x20.

I'm going to put down 4 rows of 4x6 "all weather" wood (the stuff that is ok to be on ground... not the regular PT stuff) on the 20ft length and then frame the floor on top of that.

Got a plate compactor this afternoon and got the gravel packed down tighter than 400lb lady's spandex pants.

Also hauled in another 6000lbs of gravel, used about 1/2 to fill after I tamped the first pass and the rest gave to the neighbor for a pad he's working on. Told him he could use the truck to haul more if he needed.

I have to grab my trailer from storage later this week to haul a tractor home so might go buy the lumber for the floor if I have time.

I don't get that You are not proposing to fix it down, the shed would just sit on top yes? Why on earth would the fact it sits on a concrete slab suddenly turn it from a shed into a building? Sounds like a daft piece of code to me

Can't tell from the photos, but doesn't the shed have bearers on which it would rest? Rather than make up a frame & then have trouble lining up the building to sit square on top of it; since you have compacted so well, why not use paving slabs at each corner and for each bearer/crossmember? It will give you air circulation underneath & depending upon the size of the pads, dissipate the load quite evenly.

If I would have done a slab, it would have been the floor of the shed, which makes it a permanent building. The way the rules are written, no other building can go up other than house and attached garage other than a shed. And a shed is defined as a "temporary" building used for storage. Hard to explain but that is the Cliff Notes of it.


To pour a slab just to build a wood floor on would be expensive for nothing. I'd be looking at a $3000-3500 slab! I thought about pouring or a footing, but still would be more than gravel

I have about $300 of gravel to give you an idea.

I am going to put 4 4x6s down on the ground on the 20 ft length and then build a 2x8 frame on top which will be the floor.

My folks came from Maine to visit and my Dad and I knocked out a good deal of it.

I have to finish nailing the the sheathing and then start on building trusses. I am hoping to have it all done to the point of just needing siding, and I may do that next summer depending on time/money.

It's 16x20 with 8ft 2x4 walls.

One from from today. Working by myself now so progress isn't as quick.

All the sheathing that was hung is fully nailed (top row was just tacked before) and I started on the front. Would have finished it but it started raining and it's no fun getting soaked!

Also need to put in some pieces between the headers and the top rail, and do a 45* on the door corners to match the garage.

Man door is a std 36" wide and garage door is an 8x7. Shed is just for a yard tractor, ATVs, garden ****, etc, but it could be used to park a car if I really had to.

Sorry don't have new pics, but figured I'd bump the thread.

I have all the walls sheathed now other than the top 6" or whatever. I am going to wait until after the roof so I can use the top of the studs to tie into my staging if I end up building something.

I am going to try and get the trusses all build tomorrow. Took me about 8hrs to get everything cut out. I looked into buying a truss package but they wanted $950. So far I am into them about $400.

Well been keeping busy. Sorry I haven't updated, I am terrible able taking photos.

Trusses are all built and on, just working on getting everything lined up, finished wall sheathing, faisia boards/overhangs, then just sheath the roof and roof it.

Hoping to start roofing toward the end of this week.

Here are some photos. I am probably going to have to rip off the top sheet on the wall. It was marked 7/16", but I think it's actually 3/8" The edge was green and everything else I bought at a orange edge. Was the only sheet of OSB left at Lowe's and I needed 4... go figure.

I didn't notice until after I had it all nailed and the sheathing on the bottom is thicker. I measured the the sheet I bought is just over 3/8" while the stuff already on the shed is a fat 7/16". Pretty much 1/2" actually.

Don't know how important it is that the fascia board is perfect, but the board to the end dips down about 1/4". I should have ran a string before nailing, but the board looked fairly straight so I didn't. I might use another board, have a couple extra.

I just need to get the fasica on the other side up, walls and facia on the gables and then I will be ready to put the roof on.

Oh yeah in pic 4 yes my angles in the door are not the same sheet as the rest. I completely forgot about wanting to do it to match my garage and I didn't want to waste another whole sheet just for that. The blocking is tied in really well and I'm going to sheath the inside of that wall as well so I don't think there will be a problem with it.

When I was building my workshop, my lab did the exact same thing. He'd wander over, "steal" one of my cutoffs, wander back to the shade of the tree, and gnaw on it. Awhile later, he'd wander over to "steal" a new cutoff, and take that one back to the shade... At the end of the day, the last thing I'd do is take a box over and collect all of the cutoffs he had collected!

No new pics (was dark when I came in) but I have 1/2 the roof sheathed. I should have the other side done tomorrow and I'll start roofing ASAP.

We got some freezing rain and then about 2" of snow a few days ago so it made it a PITA to clean off the trusses to put the sheathing on. Also slower going with the gloves and thick clothes (was about 20* today)

I'd have to say that 6/12 pitch is just enough to made it a pain as well. It's walkable without too much trouble, but forget setting anything on it without it sliding off.

Got the rest of the roof sheathed. Was a little slow going on my own, but I got it done anyhow. Didn't get a photo after I got that last piece on, my Dad was bugging me for pics so I wanted to get some before it got dark.

Talked to one of my friends and he is going to try and get 2-3 guys over on Friday to help me with roofing it.
