For years I used "hello! My name is..." labels. They stayed on even in the heat of my garage, and were cheap. I used the different colors (it was a multi color pack) to help, red was house stuff, green was Toyota parts, blue ford parts, etc.

I think I’m going to try and use a QR code generator that links to a picture of the contents of my totes. I always write some vague description, but something else is always in the box that isn’t labeled, and usually results in my wife and I yelling at each other.

That is an interesting idea. There are aps that you can do that with. A bar code that you print and tape to a tote, then it links to a list of items. May be more work than it is worth, but if you have a lot of storage items this could be a good solution.

I use 6" Red vinyl circles. They are left over from a big sale at one of my customer's stores and I had hundreds of them left over. So, I write on them. They stand out nicely from the black totes I use. I have used tape as well with Sharpie, easy-peasy. Just doing SOMETHING is better than going through the desert with a "tote" with no name.
