Do the 12-30 gallon storage totes go on sale during the end of year shopping season? Ive been looking to organize everything in the garage, and it seems a bunch of 18 gallon totes are what I need. I was thinking of building a couple of shelving units ~8ft wide, with two shelves, which would put two totes high on each shelf as well as the ground.

I noticed kmart had some 18 gallon totes on sale last night for $3.50 each (from $7 each) and tried to buy 20, but couldn't get the website to work, and today they are back up to $6.30 each.

Is Walmart the cheapest at 8 18 gallon totes for $40?

Be wary of cheap totes. Some of them break easily and leave you with a useless piece of trash. Avoid clear boxes. I've found these to be brittle. Any of the opaque boxes that are more rubbery are decent (like Rubbermaid).

I bought a ton of the Home Depot hdx heavy duty ones, they are just under 10 bucks. Strong as heck though.

I purchased some made by Rubbermaid from HD recently that are very nice, black in color lids are yellow. The indent in the lid matches to bottom so they stack nicely. I saw the same ones at Costco a week later, near the same price.

These things are priced all over the place. This where shopping really comes into play. I've seen big ones for $6.99 at Big Lots. It's just a matter of being at the right place at the right time.

Family handyman magazine ran an article this year about wood storage racks and storage totes. I believe I saw a Thread here about it. Buy the totes so you can build the racks to fit.
Always buy the heavy duty ones. The cheap ones will break and Drop the Contents on the Floor. Then you say s#*!?{.

The plans should be on their website too.

I bought a bunch at Walmart around Halloween. They had black and orange ones for $6 each. After Halloween they were $4. My wife said they do that for holidays so I'm hoping they'll have red ones that cheap after Christmas.

You are correct, after Christmas thru about 1st week of January. I used these in my attic for storage and for projects at work. The hardest part for me is that after having just about every brand, and type, RubberMade are getting so hard to find....I'm not going to buy any without being real RubberMade...they don't get hard and break. All the others I have purchased have failed.. about 4 other brands.

Last January at home depot, they had a 75% off blowout sale on all their Christmas ****. You couldn't have given me the decorations, but they had huge green Rubbermaid totes nearby. These were not included in the sale, but I pointed out to the manager that the sign said "all" Christmas items were 75%. He reluctantly gave me the deal and I bought 5 at about 5 bucks a piece. They are very nice quality as long as you're not one to color coordinate with red toolboxes. I think I also got the 10% vet discount on top of it.

I do that (if you're talking about sterlite containers). It looks stupid. I prefer to just hang stuff from the wall.

Actually, I was looking at those pantry wire shelves that hodot sells for around 30 bucks, those would be real great for storing surplus. Just slap it on the wall and load it up. Of course, plastic deals are cheaper. And usually they clearance out the holiday stuff after the season. I mean after each holiday (also "retail holidays" they put the holiday plastic bins on clearance (halloween, christmas, "college/back to school", some other random seasonal stuff). I know why they make them but they look godawful unless you're a fan of gaudy stuff; the halloween ones are always orange or purple, the christmas are usually dark green or red, the college ones are usually pink, teal, or blue, etc.

I mean the bigger sizes. I don't know where you'd find room for 20 of the bigger sized bins but oh man it would **** to get stuff out of the ones you're storing up top.

I've said this before but +1 on the rubbermaid totes, they don't crack like hard plastic totes tend to (especially if you store them in unheated space). They also don't change the damn design every few months like everyone else seems to, so all the totes & lids are interchangeable and stack nicely together.

I got some Rubbermaid that been there a long time. Some of them used hard and still going.

Raven, nice setup and there is the option if needed to double the shelves in the same space. Move up about 6 inches and hang another shelf below those.
