This is my spot and I really need some good ideas on tables, work benches, storage.. anything built yourself or cheaply bought. I dont want to buy 25K in expensive storage for a spot that is rented.

Started lightly using this, this past winter. Moved in and work got really slow so there were no extra funds to equipt it adequately, but things are starting to pick back up again.

Its 55x30(my part, the entire space is 155x55), but I try to keep it down to around 30x40 without dragging my **** across the ENTIRE place.

Lets see what you guys have done.

Ive been buying old school, 24x36x72 shelving, for $15 a unit, also got some 36x36x72 for the same price, all from closed automotive stores. This stuff is so heavily built, you can literally climb up on it, I'm storing in excess of 200lbs on some individual shelves for a total of a grand or more per unit. Ive even got pallets of motors and transmission in the shop right now on top of the 24 x 36 shelving.

I have also been buying used pallet rack like a madman, at every auction I can get it. If there is a large quantity, no chance of buying any, because the "big" buyers show up and take all of it, but Ive been not spending over $75 for 9' wide x 8' high, with usually at least 6 cross bars, and I also buy the "screens" so you can store boxes on them, not just pallets.

The image of pallet rack in my storage unit, its light duty rack and is only about 6' tall and 8' wide, Ive also got some that is 9' and 12' tall

Wow, that's a great space to have. Wish I had even half of that room! I recently have almost finished my shop space, it's about 20x20, biggest we could go, given the narrow lot our house is on. I built these benches from materials from Lowe's, including the tops which are stain ready laminated pine. They are made out of 4x4's and 2x6's, with 2x4s for the lower shelf supports. They are very strong. I keep all of my misc. parts in the tubs on the lower shelf. The uppers are cheapies, but work OK for my needs. Also have the laundry in there, which complicates things. The small storage cabinet in the center is on locking casters, so I can move it when needed. The bench with the vise and grinder is bolted to the wall, so I can beat on it without it moving all over.

Here are a few pics:

Here's a bench I built, it's entirely 1/2" plywood except for 6 2" x 4"'s for the legs. everything is dadoed and glued together with some screws holding sides and back to the 2x 's

The metal top I had custom made and assembled the side edges with pop rivets. I put 2 sheets of 3/4" flake board under the metal top, top is heavy and solid being over wood.

Hi HomeBrewA4 :: My answer to all my problems for putting thing in my shop is easy, I put everything I think I will ever want to move is on wheels, And it works great, I got a great deal on 200 old shopping cart about 10 years ago,
and the front wheels have a 1/2 inch bolt that holds them on, and they will hold a lot and they swivel 360, The best thing I have on wheels is my work Bench, it has 6 shoping cart wheels under it, and a 4 foot shop light on top,
and a lot of storage under it, So I can move it anywhere in the shop when I'm working on something and have all my tools and light right where I need it.

nice chop shop

:3gears:

wishin' i had that much space...

2 motor builds going at once can ****.

My issue is, the space is too big. My mind is just spinning circles anytime i think about building tables or hanging cabinets. It almost feels like i'm overwhelmed with the space and dont feel anything I do could fill it properly.

I have been browsing the threads when I have a chance and have some good ideas.

Thanks again fellas.

JKJK I get your reasoning, Probally dont have to build a bunch of benches but I would recommend getting those cheap metal shelves that warehouses use to stock stuff. Right now your shop looks like a rich ricer boy's garage with parts everywhere and stuff on the floor.

If you can spend some money get some shelves and organized them into a corner and with all that space it will be like your own corner of inventory. Even some hanging lofts for lighter materials would work.

Took around 2 weekends to make. The legs are 4x4's and the rest is 2x4's and half inch plywood for the table tops.

Yeah, the stuff laying everywhere is a pain to deal with. Those pics were taken right after pulling one of the motors apart for someone so I hadnt numbered, labeled and put the stuff away.

I have 2 sections of the metal shelves, but the ones i have, have been used and abused.

I have been thinking about doing 3/4 MDF tops with 4x4 and 2x4 frames as tables.. and down the road, wrapping the tops in stainless.

Yes, I will slap myself for saying the space is too big. lol
