I stumbled across this online. I never saw one and found the idea interesting.
A purpose built cheater bar for wrenches. Who'd have thought.

It's interesting and seems to be well made, but it puts a lot of stress on one point of the jaw. Other attempts to create a similar tool gripped the shaft of the wrench rather than just one side of the jaws.

There is a better one out there that grips the wrench shaft.
In fact that home tools site shows how to build one that grips the wrench shaft.

You can get the same effect by using another box end wrench and hook it in the open end. You can save you money or buy more tools with it.

I'm not saying this is a good practice, but some times desperate times call for desperate measures.

We've had three threads on it so far. Really, it's just a sweet way to spread the jaws of your wrench.

Wouldn't take one as a gift. Just pondering about it,

I'm not saying this is a good practice, but some times desperate times call for desperate measures.

If a guy is in a situation where the cheater pipe/bar he brought along instead of the correct tool which he didn't bring is the only thing which will save the day, what does that say about his thought processes?

A nice cheater bar but it would be far better to use the right tool. But saying that I wouldn't mind using it at work and just warranty the wrenches I would break.

I just use various diameters/lengths of pipe if I absolutely have to use a cheater. Most of the time Its just easier to grab a breaker bar and socket.

I just bought the 9-1/2" version. I wish it was made in the US, but I've been looking for something like this for awhile now. I thought the price was fair considering it has free shipping.

Thanks OP!!

I tend to agree.

Just curious, what do you plan on working on that it makes more sense to use this tool versus an existing tool (such as a breaker bar)? In most cases that you can get a box end wrench onto something, a ratchet/socket will usually work as well.

At work I run into these spots occasionally.

Example: Space where only a wrench head will get on properly. specifically a extra long box end wrench is on the fastener... still wont budge. This is a perfect situation for this tool. You can have the correct tool to do the job, but somethings thats not enough... sometimes you need more leverage (or heat) to break a bolt loose.

I would rather spread the teeth on a wrench and get the fastener loose than struggle with a bolt for a hour swearing and not making money. Tools are replaceable!

I was thinking the same thing. Specifically, I was thinking of the time I was replacing a guibo/flex disc on a BMW. Space was limited while flat on my back. I was using a Snap-on long, zero offset box end wrench (and a second backup wrench) because I couldn't get a socket in there and, although I got it off, it fought me good and there are six bolts to remove. A little extra leverage would have helped. I guess I could have used a pipe if I had the right length and diameter but I didn't.

It seems odd they show it hooked onto a ratcheting wrench as those always warn to not use them for breaking nuts loose. :dunno:

For the wrench guys sure. If you want to be cheap you can get the ez-red connector set for 10-15 bucks for the extra leverage. Just saying, not knocking the idea; the more options the better.

Good idea, I'm doubling wrenches almost every day. Sometimes I do it just to save my palms. 2 wrenches are still longer then some xtra long wrenches. I'd like to see one that's extendable, maybe with a locking flex. Then it would be a win.

Sometimes I wonder if the guys saying, "use the right tool" ever work on cars at all. I AM THE RIGHT TOOL. Tools are an extension of me. Hell, i've trippled up wrenches and used a pipe on the end. I have almost every tool out there, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Another KISS version, made for larger combo wrenches. Don't use it much since getting a 3/4" drive socket set.

Must be nice to always have every tool for every vehicle ever made. Or to be able to see the future so you know when you need a certain tool. Or to get sent out of the shop and not know what your looking at. God forbid someone uses a tool wrong. Many tools are bought when you find out the hard way you need it. If you cant find it.......well its gotta get done.

What makes it so bad? Any pics?

I'll try and get some pix up tomorrow. Overall it looks okay from a distance but up close it really is just a polished turd. This should have been retailed at $5.99 and not $25. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I'll let you guys be the judge when I post some pictures of the turd! :D

A couple of weeks ago I used a nut and short bolt to link a half-moon gearwrench and indexing gearwrench together to get a extremely hard to get at bolt loosened. I had to rummage through my nut and bolt collection to do it. I thought why doesn't make something like that. And then you post it.
Upon your recommendation, just ordered both sets (metric and sae). Thanks :D

^^This.. Seriously, who here that actually works on stuff regularly hasn't done this at least once? I grew up in an old school International Harvester truck dealership and was taught to do this while I was still working on my bicycles. Sometimes the tool you have at the moment is the tool you have to use. My old pappy is 87 this year and some of you guys would curl up in your cocoon and die if you heard some if the stories I've heard about the expedient repairs the old timers used to do on the side of the road...

If I really need to double up wrenches I get a double box and put a pipe over it. I've gt a few williams superwrench tht are way spread nd this is the only way I cn think it happened. I've done this to a few craftsman raised panels myself. I try not to

Been doing that--rarely--for more than thirty years.

I have a version of it.
Friggin' wonderful. I love it. Need some Plasti-Dip on the handle, though.

That may be a project for me.
