Ok, so after all the pictures of everyone's tool boxes, I'm motivated to get my boxes organized. I'm sure most of you are like me with many duplicates of standard size sockets and even wrenches. How do you store them, throw them in a bottom draw or what. Pictures would be great.

Since I'm in a home secure shop I just put the extras up on an area of the wall. I'm like 4 deep on most sizes.

Sockets...still working in that.

To be honest, I keep sets, so I have deep, mid and shallow in 6 point and 12 point, I rarely need more than that. They are all on rails. I do have more sets in other boxes, plus impact sets, then a lot are duplicated between drive sizes.

If I think I might need the duplicate someday, I tuck it away in a separate toolbox I keep for that purpose. If I don't think I'll ever need it again, I'll usually donate it to someone.

I keep dupilcates..

Cos i frequent flee markets & second hand stores & just buy up whatever i can for cheap.. i pack ed both my roadbox & my big box with almost the same setup.. (main box obviously bigger) but i put all the really good stuff away in a seperate section for those ''just in case'' situations..

To have more tools than needed is to never ''not'' have tools when needed

I have some duplicate combo wrenches on a pegboard in the basement.

Other duplicates are stored and sorted by manufacturer and type in plastic shoe boxes from Family Dollar ($1.00 each), and put on shelves in the basement. Also easier to find when I break something

I keep puzzling them into any drawer I can find with just a little bit of remaining space. And I never buy duplicate tools thinking it's good to have a spare just in case. ......I buy duplicate tools because I have a tool buying/tool hoarding/tool collecting addition.

Someone posted a while back here how the race crews would have the equivalent of a cash register till type organizer where each compartment was nothing but one size wrench.

If there are duplicates you have because you use them all the time (I use 6/8/10/13mm constantly) this type of organization might be worth trying.

I do this. I have 3 boards/racks in shop for wrenches. I do this to some extent with sockets, really easy, never found anything as good.

I'm not too concerned about the duplicates. It's the septuplicates, octuplicates, decuplicates, etc. that I have difficulty keeping organized.

I just unloaded a bunch of duplicate socket. They have been taking up space for years.

I have a duplicate set of SAE combinatiomn wrenches because the second set has 6 point pox ends. That's it on the duplicates, not counting my wife's little too box and traveling tool box.

A home shop really doesn't need a pile of that stuff. One of my best Buds had a 2 car shop he worked from, really had a simple set of tools, didn't work on the road or have multiple men etc. Only really needed 1 of most things.

I have collected tools for at least 45 years. I have lots of extras. It was after I came here that I started only recently to try and get things organized. So now I know which sets need filling and which sets need more of a certain brand to be a true set. Before this everything was loose in a drawer, one drawer for 3/8, one for 1/4...etc. My biggest drawer was wrenches. Not really a good system. Was hard sometimes to find just the size socket or wrench i needed.

Extras are now in cardboard boxes or tool boxes. I have 60 pounds of extra wrenches.

I'm still working on getting organized.

I have 3 "sets"

Trunk of my Outback
Tool Cart
Tool Box

There are a few types only in one spot... flex are only in my tool box... mid length too. All the bigger sockets are in my Tool Cart.

Random duplicates are in a series of zip lock bags.

Duplicate wrenches (exact duplicates)... are stacked with their twins.

Klein zipper bags since I have a bunch of them. No that cheap but keeps stuff somewhat organized and out of my way.

I keep my sets in my main box. Since I buy a lot at auctions, I have three large tool boxes for my dupes, what I consider "grade b" tools and "everything else".

I often give my grade B stuff to people just starting out.

Sockets separated by drive size, in Ziploc bags each with a shot of WD-40, all bags in a Rubbermaid tub on a shelf.

This box and another smaller one for extra, seldom, specialty. I will walk to it for less used tools to keep them out of general circulation where there is a chance for loss.
The second box is for misc, a lot of widgets we built, some fittings etc. I stripped some of that a while back, had a drawer in one filled with speed crank wrenches, havnt used one in 20 years. I finally stripped them and shoved off to storage.
I have other places to put junk and am almost compulsive about stripping stuff out of the shop I don't or am not using or working on. It is too much to sort thru for common items we do use. Same for the service carts or stations, I went thru one the other day and found 6 or 8 half inch x 1/2 chrome sockets. I only use 1 occasionally.

I keep my duplicates in hand boxes that I've picked up mainly at garage sales. Right now I have separate boxes for pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets/ratchets (1/4" and 3/8"), sockets/ratchets (1/2"), and miscellaneous. They take up more space than I'd like, but they're all stowed away under a bench.

I ran out of tool storage space a long time ago. All duplicates that have been replaced by higher quality tools were relocated to a cardboard box. (Sorry, Craftsman)

As Cary said, for a home shop or even one man garage, duplicates are not needed. I have my large tool box, and several smaller boxes for different needs, but I don't keep duplicate spares.

I've weeded out duplicates, and sell them off. I've been doing this for about 2 to 3 years, I think I may have had somewhat of a hoarding problem. The posters that say they have a plastic tub or ziplock bag or 60 pounds of duplicates are all right. I have probably 1500 pounds of duplicates, and that's after I've sold easily 1/2 to 2/3 of them off already. I went through my main box again a couple months ago and took out about 600 wrenches and other tools that were redundant.

I'd highly recommend getting rid of duplicates, unless you do something that breaks tools frequently; then I'd keep duplicates of that tool. I break probably less than 5 tools a year; definitely not worth keeping duplicates of everything. The space duplicates take up and the effort to own them, store them, etc is not worth it in the big picture.

However, how I define duplicates may not be the same as you. I have 2 or 3 combination wrenches of each size, both SAE and Metric in my main box. I also have box end, open end, angle wrenches, short wrenches, ratcheting wrenches. In sockets, I have regular and deep in all 3 drive sizes, plus impacts. Ratchets, I have about 30 in different sizes and configurations. Screwdrivers, several of each size in different configurations. About 50 pairs of pliers. So, if I break something, there's automatically backup there. Plus, I have a road box that has a pretty comprehensive setup also.

If you really feel a compulsion to store duplicates against the chance of breaking or losing something, box them up and put them in low access storage, so you don't have them in your way all the time. At least get them out of your normal tool space so they're not interfering with finding other stuff.

A lot of my duplicates are vintage tools from the 50s and 60s. I like tinkering with old cars and machines from that era and got this crazy idea that it would be more fun to work on those things with similar aged tools. Honestly, it's just another excuse to buy more tools.....and now I'm looking for vintage boxes to put them in.

Some in the shops, some scattered in the various vehicles, some in each of the barns, some loaned out to family, some in the house, and some ... well I'm sure they are here somewhere.

I usually sell or give away duplicates

Sounds like a good idea to me... but I must confess, up to a point I will keep "cheap duplicates" ie use the good stuff for my usual chores, but... if I am going to abuse a tool , I am glad to have a cheap piece of @!@#$%^ to abuse ! No way I would take a grinder to a Stahlwille ( eg = Snap-On) socket for a frivoulous 20 minute job.....

For a long time I had the home toolset, work toolset, and a Craftsman USA socket set in my truck. After moving the work tools into a service truck, I realized how overkill it is to have a full range of impacts in the work truck, chrome in the work box, sets of SK chrome at home, IR impact set at home, and the CM set in my home truck. Sold everything not in the service truck, a set of chrome 1/4" in the work box, and the CM set. More money in the wallet, and less heavy redundant stuff to drag around.

I recently ended up with a box packed with drawers of more sockets. Sold the USA ones on eBay, and still have a box of misc "junk" sockets. May make a set out of some, and donate the rest to Humane Society or their thrift store.

It feels good to unload the extras, plus once you get selling, it's hard to stop. I'm in the slow season of work right now, so an extra $200-300 a month is nice to make from junk I've been dragging around for years.:lol_hitti

I bought another house to store my extra tools. :)

I was at an estate sale yesterday where the guy did that. He hoarded until there was not an inch left... then bought the house next door and filled that.

A box at wotk turned into a tote. The #ust in case' stuff went home or gor set aside.

Home box became three totes, bike, house and electrical.
Antiques finally on display.

A back up set of work tools in case of theft was the last save.

Then a massive pile of cool but unused stuff was slowly sold off to reduce bulk. I really do not miss any of of it and capacity isn't really hurt.
It was mostly just not really knowing what or how much I had anymore.
