It would be amazing if a few companies like Hillman, GRK, Spax and others got together and developed a modular system (similar to the Essve Essbox system above) that would standardize modular plastic containers for their hardware. It would be a value-added system in my opinion, as the containers would be interchangeable and they could be used for other items when empty. I like the current GRK plastic containers as they function as small storage bins when empty, but this system in Sweden looks excellent.

Sortimo cases by Metabo for the smaller stuff, portable and durable
Sortimo also makes the Bosch L-Boxx stuff, I have quite a bit but it's way too expensive for me to use as my main hardware storage.

I got these HDX boxes at Home Depot for $5 each. The rack turned out askew on one side as you can see, but it works fine for me. b7ceb9b0ef2cb80f963b2f7f5bf037b1.jpg

The L-Boxx is what you are looking for ....(or the Systainer...)

This is what I use. It is double sided, but I am already out of space!

That is cool. And inspiring. I have a couple of the Durham style cabinets, about 6 extra drawers, and a portable plano case with electrical at work. At home I have a couple of the harbor freight organizers, and a bunch of different clear drawer ones. Still have a couple 5 gallon buckets to sort. Now I want to build a rolling rack like that for everything. I love Adam savage's sortimo setup, but couldn't bear the investment myself. There's quite a video on YouTube about it.

Very nice boxes, isn't Tanos the OEM for all of these?
http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=68749

I can buy a couple or even 10-12 over a period of time, but too expensive to buy 30+ boxes for a parts organizing sytem like some have made on this thread....like
http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=289281&showall=1

I love these storage boxes and personally prefer ones that have removable bins versus the ones that have dividers you can change around. For me to be able to take the bin within the case out has advantages, for my personal use.

The HF cases that go for $5.99 with coupon
https://www.harborfreight.com/19-bin-portable-parts-storage-case-93928.html
Are these about the best bang for the buck out there? Anyone have anything else for $10 or less?

There is a special on amazon for USA Durham scoop boxes, 9x13 boxes for $12/per each; so for example, a $100 budet would buy you 8 boxes and 8x24 storage bin segments (=192 or $0.50/per segment). That is about the same cost as plastic containers at big box stores.

Also search for "durham large scoop box", they have several for around $21-$23... When you figure the cubic inches the larger actually costs less than the smaller...

But again, depends on what you are storing... I like the smaller ones because when the large get full they can get pretty heavy.

Yeah, I thought I wanted the 18 inchers until I saw both in use. Specifically for nuts and bolts, I would go with the 13inch densely packed. Also good for terminal/crimping assortments. Thes items are reasonably complet in sub square foot assortments, and both for space and cost, I think I do prefer the 9x13 size. Of course everyone needs to decide for their personal situation and the scale of their shop what makes the most sense. There is definitely a $/sense element, so crucnh the numbers for each situation

Good stuff guys,it sure saves time having things organized. The quality of scoop boxes and the ease of getting your fingers on small items is worth it.Plano is U.S.A so that helps a fellow worker. These picture's tell me I'm not the only one that saves.

I like the HF ones though I would never carry them vertically. I like that you can remove the bins you need to take with you, very convenient. I wish I could buy some bins on their own. I use the bigger ones but not the really small ones. So for the price, I buy more boxes and transfer the bins I need.

I have another smaller one that becomes a "collector" for randoms but also have it on my service truck.

All the pallet racking in that room is 24" deep. The blue ones I think are 14' high, the rest are 12'.

I have seen pallet rack as narrow as 12", although it isn't very common. BTW Interlake will make whatever you want. It takes a couple of weeks, usually. Minimums are not bad.

Alex, how wide are those dark blue uprights? They look narrower than 24". I'd love to find a set.

Depending on how much space you have and how much you need to store, you could use jam or peanut butter jars with the lids fixed to the underside of a shelf. You can see what's in each jar and just unscrew the one you want and put it back when you're finished. You also get to eat a lot of peanut butter. Not a bad thing in my opinion...

I store all sorts of often-used hardware in these. It's anything from electrical (home and auto) to zip/cable ties.

The nuts and bolts I do store are of common sizes that I frequently use. I have some oddball stuff, too, but if I were running out of space, I'd toss it.

I have a cabinet in the attic that's just left-over boxes of screws and nails, as well as a large container of nails for the nail gun. I need to put in brads and finish nails in there, too.

20170522_213800_zps5wyg3bxw.jpg

The 3 tool boxes I use for bases has different hardware storage. Stuff that could either be specific to the item on the box or stuff that's better stored in a wider/flatter drawer. Items like sandpaper, flap disks, etc. are in a few drawers. Band saw blades go in another. I still have room to grow but the plan is to never go beyond the space I have.

Nice storage solutions and a great setup in your shop.

One humungos advantage you have....like the old saying"there is no substitute for cubic inches", your advantage is there is no substitute for having space.

I have little floor space and forget wall space, throw 5 darts in my garage and you would be lucky if just one actually hit wall (rather than something hanging on the wall)
