Straight tang

Curious about this auger bit.
Looks like a normal auger bit but the tang has straight sides.
Never seen one like this before.

Can't find any markings, it's in pretty rough shape.

It's probably from 1900 to 1930. Lots of ordinary, workaday tools were being made by small shops back then, with no I.D. markings, intended strictly as cheap user tools, with no guarantee. Surprisingly most were pretty well made.

Not an expert or pretend to be one, but I've never seen one like that.

I think 1 my post drills has a set-screw chuck that would take straight square like that. What does it measure? Are there set marks on it?

Here's a better pic in daylight.
There is an "8" stamped for the size.
The tang measure 3/8" square and 1 1/4" long.

Augur bits were generally marked in 16ths. So an 8 would indicate 8/16ths or 1/2 inch.

I have a handful of bitstock items w straight tangs like that. Will look to see if there is a name for them.

Don’t see anything here, but these, and 4 or 6 pages later have the straight tang. Does yours have signs of a nut being cut off the End?

Thanks ! That catalog is awesome.
No sign of a nut being removed.
I was thinking the cutting end was damaged/reground since there is no screw.
But your catalog shows that was an option.
