After finishing my Craftsman 150 restoration last winter, I noticed a lot of my drill bits are not straight. Some just because they are really cheap bits, and some good ones that have been used in hand/portable drills.

Seems that a lot of the smaller bits that have been used in a handheld drill are no longer straight, not sure if this is due to use or abuse, but I now have a set dedicated to my drill press. The slightly out-of-true bits are fine for hand held uses, but annoying in the drill press.

Others see this?

Oh yeah. I roll mine across the drill press table, if they wobble or jump they go in the spare drills bag, which is used for the outside/portable drill uses.

Is it even possible to bend a drillbit without breaking it?

To put it simply, yes. You can start a drill in a press or mill and let it walk some, the smaller ones you can watch the bend taking place. Most evident on smaller diameter, long drills. Steel will flex quite a bit. Carbide, on the other hand is fairly intolerant and will break.

Are you sure sure the chuck is good? I've had chucks that will wobble a bit, then you remove but and put it back and it runs more true.

...never have that problem with an Albrecht!
