My compressor has a 15" aluminum flywheel on the pump that has been dinged on the outside edge. It looks like the wheel is still true, but it probably isnt. Can this be taken out and the wheel checked for true? what would be a place that does this. a new wheel is 135 dollars

You need someone with a dial indicator... spin the wheel by hand... once... to see how far it's out. I would check the surface of the inside running track... NOT the outside edge because the edge may show forging issues.

I have a dial indicator, what's acceptable on a 15" wheel

$135 is probably cheaper than having a machinist fix it (if it needs it).

thats what I was worried about

If it were a 15" aluminum car wheel, .030" lateral runout is considered excessive.

If your flywheel is bent enough to be a problem, it will be obvious at a look while it's running.

There are shops which straighten bent aluminum car and truck wheels, no machinist required.

It's a relatively slow spinning pulley with a belt on it, it would take a lot of run out before that would become a problem. I have a compressor that was dropped, and has nearly 1/4" of run out at the edge of the flywheel. It looks horrible while running, but it's been like that for literally years without a problem. The belts don't seem to care either.

If there's no visible run out, I wouldn't even give it a second thought.

Checkout Green Valley compressor in Keller, they have a ton of used flywheels in stock. They are located on 377 north of Keller Hicks road.

Ditto on the crack scenario. Best to inspect it carefully. If no crack I might still try to find a good used one if they aren't too expensive.

Are there any issues when the compressor runs? Personally, I might take a good luck at it for cracks to see if there's any gross issues and just hand dress any local imperfections. If no gross issues and it seems to run ok, I wouldn't worry about run-out as measured with an indicator.. The flywheel is likely cast and any any uneven casting issues were likely balanced out as part of the manufacturing process. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
